35 years old, a massive root ball, way too much soil, and somehow I decided this sounded like a relaxing afternoon. 😂

Godzilla got the full repot treatment.

Fresh soil, roots cleaned up, back into the pot, and ready to keep doing what he’s been doing for the last three and a half decades.

Did I dramatically repot my favorite tree to Linkin Park?

Absolutely.

Would I do it again?

Also absolutely. 😂🌳

Your bonsai isn’t going to look perfect all the time, and it doesn’t need to.

Sometimes we let them grow wild. Sometimes we cut them way back. Sometimes they look worse today because we’re building something better for tomorrow.

The question isn’t always, “Does my tree look good right now?”

Ask yourself, “Is my tree moving in the right direction?”

Embrace the awkward stages. They’re part of bonsai too.

Why would you remove perfectly healthy leaves from a bonsai? 🌿✂️

For me, there are 3 main reasons.

Styling and easier wiring.

Reducing leaf size.

Encouraging new growth and better ramification.

Defoliation is a powerful tool, but like everything in bonsai, there should always be a reason behind what you’re doing.

Know the why. Read the tree. Make every move with purpose.
