A Burnt Electrical Outlet Is a Serious Warning Sign!

This recent job is a reminder of how quickly an electrical problem can become a potential fire or electrocution hazard!

The burnt receptacle in this photo indicates possible electrical arcing, often caused by a loose connection at the outlet or plug. Even more concerning? The circuit breaker never tripped!

⚠️ What went wrong?

A loose connection may have caused overheating and electrical arcing.

The receptacle should be replaced, and the plug and anything connected to it should be inspected for damage.

The circuit must be checked to ensure proper GFCI protection is in place.

A standard circuit breaker is designed primarily to protect against overcurrent conditions. It may not trip when a loose connection causes dangerous arcing. A GFCI provides additional protection against certain electrical shock hazards, but it does not detect every type of arcing or prevent every electrical fire.

Don't ignore burnt outlets, discoloration, or signs of overheating! If you notice these warning signs, stop using the outlet and have it inspected by a licensed electrician.

At Excel Electrical Group, we take electrical safety seriously. Don't wait until a small problem becomes a major hazard!

Award-Winning Service at Excel Electrical Group!

We’re proud to share that our owner, Bob Messing, recently won Best Infomercial for sharing how Excel Electrical Group goes above and beyond to help our customers!

Bob shared a great example of what customer service means to us. A customer called with a tripped main breaker, and instead of immediately scheduling a service call, Bob walked her through a safe troubleshooting process over the phone. Together, they determined the issue was related to the air conditioning system rather than the electrical system, saving the customer an unnecessary electrical service call.

At Excel Electrical Group, we believe great service is about more than just fixing problems, it’s about building trust, being honest, and looking out for our customers, even when it doesn't mean a service charge.

Thank you to everyone who continues to trust us with your electrical needs!

HELP! MY WALL IS HOT! 🔥

This electrical switch was definitely burning up — and it could have turned into a much bigger problem, including a potential electrical fire.

Here’s what went wrong:

1. The terminal was clearly marked “NO AL.” That means the terminal was not rated for aluminum wire.

2. Aluminum wire was connected to a terminal that wasn’t designed for it. The improper connection created excessive resistance and heat, which caused the screw terminal to burn and overheat.

🔥 Electrical connections that overheat can damage the wiring, switches, and surrounding materials — and in the right conditions, start a fire.

This is a great reminder that electrical work isn't just about making a connection — the right wire, terminal, and equipment must be compatible.

If you notice a hot switch, burning smell, discoloration, buzzing, or flickering, don't ignore it. Have a licensed electrician check it out.

Another potentially dangerous electrical problem caught before it became something much worse!

⚡ LOOK CLOSELY — THIS SMALL DETAIL CAUSED A BIG PROBLEM! ⚡

If you look closely at the green screw in the photo, you can see the burn marks around the screw. That is NOT something you want to see!

This screw plays an important role in the electrical panel. It helps establish the proper connection between the grounded and grounding systems, providing a low-impedance path for fault and surge currents to safely return toward the service grounding system.

In this case, the screw was loose, which compromised that connection. The result was a poor path for surge current, and the property experienced electrical damage.

🔌 This is a great example of why electrical panels should be inspected by a qualified electrician. Sometimes a problem that looks as small as a loose screw can have much bigger consequences.

At Excel Electrical Group, we look beyond the obvious to identify electrical problems before they become bigger, and more expensive, issues.

⚡ ONE LIGHTNING STRIKE. MASSIVE DAMAGE. ⚡

This recent job shows just how destructive a lightning strike can be.

The lightning didn’t just damage the electrical system—it traveled throughout the home, damaging electrical wiring, AC ductwork, and even the wood framing along the way.

Some of the most serious damage from a lightning strike can be hidden behind walls, ceilings, and other building components. Even if your lights, outlets, and appliances appear to be working, that doesn’t necessarily mean your electrical system is OK.

If your home or business has been struck by lightning, don’t assume everything is fine. Have the electrical system inspected by a qualified electrician.

At Excel Electrical Group, we inspect, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems when lightning and other electrical events cause damage.

Another Example of Why Your Electrical Grounding System Matters!

Here’s a great example of a bad grounding electrode system that we recently came across.

If you look closely at the picture, you can see that the grounding conductor next to the ground rod is not actually connected to the ground rod. Even worse, the clamp that is supposed to secure the connection is broken.

That means the grounding electrode system is not providing the protection it was designed to provide.

⚡ Why is this important?

Your grounding electrode system provides a path for electrical surges, such as those caused by lightning or other high-voltage events, to safely dissipate into the earth.

When that connection is broken, the surge may not have the intended path to ground, potentially putting your home's or business's electrical system at greater risk of damage.

This is why having your electrical system properly inspected and maintained by a licensed electrician is so important.

👉 If you’re unsure about the condition of your grounding system, give Excel Electrical Group a call. We can inspect it and make sure your electrical system is properly grounded and protected.
