Why hiring a contractor familiar with coastal conditions matters.

Don't let a small pile of debris turn into a major roof leak.

This photo is a great example of why regular roof maintenance matters. It may not look like much, but the buildup of needles, twigs, leaves and moss in a roof valley can create serious problems over time.

A roof valley is designed to collect and channel large amounts of rainwater off your roof. When debris accumulates in that area, water can't flow freely. Instead, it begins to back up, increasing the chance that water will work its way underneath the shingles. Once water gets below the roofing system it can lead to leaks, damaged decking, mold growth, insulation damage and costly interior repairs.

Moss creates another issue. It holds moisture against the shingles, preventing them from drying properly. Over time, that constant moisture can accelerate shingle deterioration, loosen the protective granules and shorten the life of your roof. As moss grows, it can even lift the edges of shingles, making them more vulnerable to wind and water intrusion.

Routine roof maintenance is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your home. Regular inspections and debris removal help:

We just wrapped up this paint job on a house that was built in the 1950s. We are a lead paint, repair, and renovation certified firm. Luckily the house tested negative for lead which made the job much easier when it came to prep. Did you know that in Oregon your contractor has to carry a lead paint certificate in order to bid on homes that are older than 1978 due to the risks of lead paint? Don't let a contractor expose your kids, pets, or loved ones to lead dust contamination. Make sure they carry the proper licensing and certification to work on your home safely! 🌊

We are excited to share before and after photos of a project we just wrapped up. We took this worn-out greenhouse with plastic roofing and siding and turned it into a beautiful shop using 26-gauge snap-lock standing seam metal siding and roofing, featuring a custom-built door and a 28x14-foot, 4-inch concrete slab reinforced with rebar and high-strength fiber.

We're a licensed, bonded, and insured general contractor serving the Southern Oregon Coast. While painting is a big part of what we do, our team handles just about everything in residential and commercial construction except electrical and plumbing. If you have carpentry or other construction experience, that's a huge plus.

We're looking for someone who:

- Has professional painting experience
- Takes pride in quality work and proper prep
- Shows up on time and has a strong work ethic
- Is drug-free and takes safety seriously
- Has reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
- Can work on ladders and isn't afraid of hard work

Have you noticed construction bids and material costs have increased over the past few months?

Over the past few months the cost of building materials, labor, equipment and manufacturer pricing has continued to increase. When comparing estimates it’s important to look beyond the bottom-line price.

🚩 New Roof Inspection: Dangerous Flashing Failures at Roof-to-Wall Transition

Just inspected a “brand new” roof for a homeowner near the ocean. The shingles looked okay from the ground, but up close the flashing details were a major disappointment — exactly the kind of improper roofing that leads to leaks, rot, and big repair bills.

Critical Flashing Problems:
Reused / Bent Step Flashing: The metal at this roof-to-wall junction is mangled, poorly seated, and appears to be old material that was reused or badly reinstalled. Proper step flashing should be new, neatly stepped up the wall, and fully integrated with the shingles and counterflashing.

No Proper Kickout Flashing: There’s no functional kickout at this critical spot. Instead of a clean, angled piece that diverts water away from the wall and out past the gutter, we have a sloppy transition that will funnel rainwater straight behind the siding and into the framing. This is one of the fastest ways to cause hidden water damage.

Wrong Material for Coastal Environment: In salt-air ocean areas, regular galvanized flashing corrodes quickly. You need stainless steel (typically 304 or 316) for longevity. The visible rust and peeling already showing here proves the wrong material was used.

This isn’t a small detail. Poor flashing is one of the leading causes of premature roof failure and insurance claim denials. Water intrusion at these junctions can destroy sheathing, insulation and interior walls before anyone notices.

What Should Have Been Done:
- New stainless steel step flashing installed correctly at every roof-to-wall transition.
- A properly formed kickout flashing that actually kicks water away from the house.
- Clean integration between shingles, step flashing and counterflashing.

Homeowners: Always ask to see the flashing details before the roof is buttoned up. If the crew gets defensive or says “it’s fine,” be sure to get a second opinion from a reputable roofing contractor.

Don’t let corner-cutting roofers gamble with your biggest investment. Good roofing is about the details that keep your home dry for decades.
