Painters, would you rather…Spend all day sanding drywall repairs OR caulking trim? 😂

A little something for everyone 😏

Something I wish I would’ve learned sooner…

Before I started painting professionally, I spent about 15 years (on and off) painting on the side whenever I could. I was working full time in the maintenance department at a nursing home, and we had a designated painter. Whenever they weren’t there, the painting would often fall on me, which I actually enjoyed.

But there was one mistake I made ALL the time.

I was using some of the cheapest caulk available. 😂

In all fairness, they supplied it, so don’t come for me. 😂

But at the time, I figured caulk was caulk, right?

WRONG.

I’d caulk baseboards, give it the recommended dry time, then come back and paint two coats. Once everything dried, I’d get those little spider cracks and hairline cracks through the caulk.

Every. Single. Time.

And I honestly had no idea why. I thought maybe I wasn’t letting it dry long enough, or maybe that’s just what caulk did.

It wasn’t until later that I learned the quality AND type of caulk you’re using matters.

Using the right product for the situation and spending a little more on a quality caulk can make a huge difference in the finished product.

Obvious to some. Obvious to a lot of painters.

But it was something I had to learn along the way. 🤙🏻

Hopefully somebody who’s making the same mistake I was sees this a little sooner than I did.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say, “I could paint it myself, I just don’t have the time”…

I’d be able to retire. 😂

Question for the pros:

9 foot high. 9”4’ wide. wall needs drywall.

(2) 10 foot drywall sections are provided.

Are you hanging it vertically (red) or horizontally (yellow)?

Plenty more where that came from 😭

When repainting doors, do you remove the k***s and hardware, or tape them off and paint around them?

Hypothetically speaking, let’s say you have five doors in a house to paint. My normal process is to tape off the hardware, then brush and Wiz the doors. Mostly Wiz.

A painter friend of mine removes all the hardware, paints the doors, then reinstalls everything the next day.

My only concern is that I’ve tried that before, labeled everything, and put each k**b back on the exact door it came from, but a couple of them still didn’t function correctly afterward. I’m a painter, not a carpenter 😂

Just curious. What’s your normal process?
