Wednesday tip from Maria's design floor. The one number she refuses to negotiate on, no matter how much a customer wants to squeeze an island in.

42 inches. That is the walkway between the island and the perimeter cabinet on the working side. Not 36. Not 40. 42.

Here is why we do not budge. Two things happen at the same time in a real kitchen: the oven door opens (24 inches), and someone walks behind whoever is at the range. 24 plus 15 inches of adult shoulder plus 3 inches of room to breathe is 42. Anything less and the traffic pattern breaks the room.

This week alone, Maria talked three customers out of a 38 inch walkway and one customer out of a 34. She sent them a version of this rule and a redrawn plan. All three came back with a thank you and one with a photo of their dog because it turns out the dog needs the 42 inches too.

Closing Tuesday with three real questions Maria's design floor answered before lunch. Posting them because if one of you asked, ten of you are wondering.

1. From Jenna in Sioux Falls: 'How wide should my Shaker Dove uppers be if my range is 30 inches.' 30 inch range, 15 inch wall cabinets on each side of the hood, if the wall allows. That gives you room for a 36 inch hood centered and puts spice storage inside the arm reach of the cook.

2. From Deacon in Tulsa: 'Can I mix soft-close and standard hinges to save money.' Yes technically, no in practice. When one door slams and the next one whispers, the slam is louder than it would be in an all-standard kitchen. Do all soft-close or all standard, do not split.

3. From Ana in San Antonio: 'Will my Shaker Antique White look yellow next to a warm-white subway tile.' In most Texas afternoon light, yes, slightly. Tape both up on a Saturday before you commit. Or go Shaker Dove and let the tile bring the warmth.

Tuesday tip from Maria's design floor. Save this before you finalize your kitchen plan.

The three sink and sink-base pairings we quote most, and the exact cabinet each one needs. Because eight customers this month wrote in with the sink already bought and the wrong cabinet on the plan.

1. Standard 30 inch double bowl drop-in. Sink base: 33 inches. Extra room accounts for the drop-in fl**ge and the cabinet wall.

2. 33 inch farmhouse apron front. Sink base: 36 inches. The apron front cabinet has a cut-down face frame and the base gives up 3 inches of interior for support. Do not squeeze this into a 33.

3. 24 inch single bowl for a small kitchen. Sink base: 27 inches. Any smaller and the disposal fights the plumbing.

If you already bought your sink, send Maria's floor the model number with your sketch. We will size the base correctly on the free design, first pass, so you do not find out at the countertop template that it does not fit.

Sunday note from Maria's design floor, because seven customers this week reopened the same decision at the very last minute: the range hood.

The rule Maria's floor uses on every quote: the range hood dictates the cabinet plan above the range, not the other way around. Pick the hood first, then draw the cabinets around it.

Three numbers to know before you finalize.

1. Hood width. It should be at least the width of the range, and 3 inches wider on each side is better for capture. 30 inch range, 36 inch hood is the sweet spot.

2. Duct clearance. If your hood ducts out through the ceiling, the ductwork usually takes 6 to 8 inches of depth above the hood. That kills the middle wall cabinet unless you plan for a shorter one.

3. Bottom of hood to cooktop. 30 to 36 inches. Any lower and your tall pots hit it. Any higher and the capture drops off.

Send in your range spec sheet with your kitchen sketch. Maria's floor will plan the cabinets around it in the free design.

Sunday from the Q&A pile Maria's team keeps for the weekend. Real question, real answer.

Q: 'Your listings say wood veneered natural finish interior. Is that a nice way of saying laminate.'

A: No. Laminate is a printed plastic film pressed onto particle board. What we use is a thin sheet of actual wood, sliced from a real log, glued to a plywood side panel with the grain running the length of the cabinet. When you open a White Cabinet box the inside is wood, not print. Run a fingernail across the grain, you can feel it.

The reason we do it this way and not laminate: humidity. In Florida we watch cabinets live in 80 percent summers. Laminate on particle board swells when a dishwasher leaks. Wood veneer on plywood does not.
