Meet Grady!

Grady, a senior in the Westby Area School District, is spending his School-to-Work afternoons gaining hands-on experience with the team at Berg Excavating. You may have seen him on many of our job sites throughout the summer and into the school year — or even inside a sewer! During his time with us, he’s building valuable skills in excavating, outdoor plumbing, and sewer system operations.

We’re proud to partner with Westby Area Schools to support Grady’s career goals and help bring his vision to life.

This weekend, the Berg Excavating team showcased their versatility by taking to the softball field at C**n Valley Heritage Days. Their efforts earned them a well-deserved 3rd place finish. In addition, Kenny and Spencer received special recognition for their outstanding contributions to the CVES Baseball Field project.

A heartfelt thank you to all who participated, helping make this weekend a resounding success for our small community while enjoying some friendly competition.

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Bryan “Luddy” Berg, the heart and soul of Berg Excavating. Bryan wasn’t just the founder—he was a hardworking, kindhearted man who built this company from the ground up alongside his wife, Linda. For 30 years, he made a name for himself, not just through his work but through his generosity and willingness to help anyone in need.

Although cancer took him too soon, his legacy will live on through his family and the business he built with so much passion. Spencer and Kenny are proud to carry on what he started, ensuring Berg Excavating continues to serve the community just as Bryan always did. Bryan will continue to work alongside from the excavator in the sky and we know the boys will make him proud!

Please keep Linda, Dalton, Kenzie, Spencer, and the rest of our family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Meet the current crew behind Berg Excavating - Spencer and Kenny Berg and Chad Hofslien

Cousins, Spencer & Kenny both have a passion for working with machinery and playing in the dirt. The boys grew up playing with their trucks and tractors watching their dad/uncle and learning to drive all these big machines. Today, they still do that, the toys and their sandbox just got bigger 😅
Spencer took over in 2021. Kenny became part of the crew officially in summer of 2024. They both got some more experience working for other companies before jumping fully into Berg Excavating. Chad is a long time family friend that has been helping during the summer for many years with trucking and mechanic work.

These guys make a good team taking on jobs, tackling the bookwork and coming up with new ways to improve the business, plus they keep each other entertained.
We have a busy spring ahead of us so they are looking forward to some warmer weather to get these jobs done. Thanks to all the family, friends, past and new customers for your support!

Meet the family behind Berg Excavating - Bryan, Linda, Dalton, McKenzie and Spencer. Though the crew extends further, get to know how we came to be.

Bryan and Linda married in 1994. Bryan worked for a couple different construction companies before starting his own officially in 1994, with Linda by his side playing a key role in the business by being his trusty secretary, bookkeeper and supporter. Over the years he added more machinery and contracted many various jobs such as septic systems, building foundations, land clearing and grading. He made his name well known in our area, not just for his work but for the kindhearted and helpful guy he is.

In 2024, 30 years later, Bryan retired from machine work due to some health issues but will still be a strong partner as Spencer takes over the business. Spencer has a passion for machine work and is proud to take on the family business. He is taking the time to restructure our billing system with a new program, taking courses to get the licensing he needs and learning everything he can to be the next generation of Berg Excavating.
Dalton and Kenzie are proud siblings to see their little brother take on the family business. They help out as needed on some jobs. Kenzie designed the business's logo and made sweatshirts for family and friends. She also helps out with bookwork and her favorite thing to do is wash the machinery.

So there's a little bit about the Berg's and how Berg Excavating came to be and will continue to be a great local family business.
