I’ve rushed and made quick decisions on plenty of things in my life. I even rushed my wedding. And because of that I got married in a blizzard, with no photographer, and with very few friends in attendance due to the blizzard.🥶

I know the feeling of being so excited for the end result that all the prep work to get to the end result is seen more as a burden than as a fun experience. But I’ve learned that when I rush through the process, the final result doesn’t turn out well or it’s caused me a ridiculous amount of stress along the way. And usually it’s both.

Designing your home is no different. If you rush, it’s going to be insanely stressful and the end result probably won’t be quite as great as if you took your time through the design process.

Most home projects start too late.

Not because people don’t care, but because life is busy, decisions are hard, and the right decisions are even harder when you’re pressed for time.

So people end up researching late at night, saving ideas they may or may not need, and trying to make big decisions without a clear starting point.

The early stages of a project can feel a whole lot better with a little more clarity.

That’s a big part of why we created the 10-Step Pre-Design Process mini course. 🏡

Size matters… just maybe not in the way people think. 🏡

When people start planning a home, square footage is usually the first thing they focus on.

In reality, that’s not what makes a home feel good to live in.

What shapes your day-to-day experience are the things you don’t always see: how well the home is insulated, how airtight it is, and how fresh air moves through it.

Those decisions take intention, and they take budget.

As a home gets larger, those priorities can start to stretch thin.

So it’s not really about building bigger or smaller. It’s about building in a way that allows the most important elements to be done well.

We share more about this in our blog, Building Smart: How Downsizing Your Home Can Make It Affordable and Healthy.

Happy Earth Day 🌎

We don’t design sustainable homes because it’s trendy.
We do it because the way we build actually matters… for people and for our planet.

A home isn’t just how it looks. It’s the air you breathe, the light you wake up to, the way the space supports your daily life.

At Balanced Architecture, we think a home should:
– feel calm and easy to live in
– support your health in real, tangible ways
– and be designed with the land and environment in mind

Sustainability, for us, is about being thoughtful from the very beginning.
How a home is placed on the land.
What materials are used.
How it performs over time.

When those decisions are made with intention, you end up with something that doesn’t just look good. It works better for you and treads a little lighter on the planet.

Our Earth, our home 🤍

These are my non-negotiables when it comes to designing a sustainable home.

Every project is different, but there are a few things I always come back to. The parts that really shape how a home feels and how it functions day to day, long after it’s built.

🌎 Sustainability isn’t a feature, it’s the foundation.

People have done the research. They care. They’ve put the time in, but no one’s actually shown them how to make decisions.

So suddenly… everything feels important.
Every choice feels loaded, and that’s where the overwhelm hits.

It’s not a lack of effort. It’s a lack of clarity.

And that’s the part that changes everything long term. ✨

If you’re thinking about building, it’s easy to get pulled in by a spot this time of year…But what it looks like right now isn’t always how it functions the rest of the year

Water flow, drainage, sun exposure, how the land changes season to season…those things end up shaping the house more than people expect 🌧️☀️

The land comes first
The design follows

Trying to fit a house onto land that doesn’t support it can lead to some expensive (and uncomfortable) decisions later on

There’s a bit more to think about when buying land for a healthy and sustainable home, but it’s 100% worth it. You’ll be living a comfortable, healthy life while helping to regenerate the planet. Happy land hunting!

Happy spring 🌷 and welcome to mud season 🌧️
Which basically means… whatever’s happening in your entryway is happening everywhere in your house 😅

This space works hard whether you planned for it or not

A real spot to drop all the things you need for spring in New England is no joke! You need materials (and a layout) that can actually handle the mess!

These aren’t little details, they shape how your home feels every single day ✨

Happy spring… and all the mud that comes with it 🌱

An airtight house does so much more than help your energy efficiency 😁

Build small. Live well. 🏡

Building a home today is expensive.
There’s no perfect solution.

So compromises will happen.

But not with:
💸 financial health
🌿 family health
🌎 planetary health

Good design makes smaller homes feel better to live in. ✨
