🚨I’m a habitual garden rule breaker

06/10/2026

One minute the birds are singing, the next minute they’re chasing each other through the tomatoes, peppers, and sunflowers like somebody stole the last worm in Texas! 🐦😂

There’s always some kind of drama happening in the garden. One bird starts fussing, another joins in, and before long they’re darting through the plants like they’re filming an action movie. Meanwhile, the tomatoes are ripening, the peppers are producing, and I’m just standing there wondering what started the argument in the first place.

As for me, I’m staying out of the bird business and enjoying one of the best parts of summer—fresh Chicago Hardy figs straight from the tree! There’s nothing quite like a sun-ripened fig picked at the perfect moment. Soft, sweet, and packed with flavor, they taste like honey, berry jam, and sunshine all wrapped into one delicious bite.

The birds can keep their drama. I’ll be over here eating figs. 😋🌳💜

What’s growing in your garden right now that you can’t wait to harvest?

This little critter has been helping itself to my cucumbers, peas, tomatoes, and more. How do I know? Because I have cameras. Garden cameras are worth their weight in gold. Thanks to mine, I know exactly who’s been helping themselves to my veggies! 😆 It'll be getting a trip to the woods. My garden. My rules.

How did I catch the possum? It’s not rocket science—I simply offered one of its favorite treats. I cut a huge tomato in half and placed both pieces in the trap.

Funny how those tomato halves sat there untouched for days… until the possum showed up. Then suddenly, the tomato disappeared!

Thanks to my garden cameras, I now know exactly who’s been helping themselves to my tomatoes. People can say possums don’t eat vegetables all they want, but my cameras tell a different story. Turns out, people may lie, but cameras don’t! 😂🍅📸

I harvested another seed-loaded sunflower head today! 🌻

One of the easiest ways to tell if a sunflower head is ready to harvest is when the back of the flower turns from green to yellowish-brown, the petals have dried up or fallen off, and the seeds look fully developed. As for me, I always pull a few seeds from different areas of the sunflower head before harvesting the whole thing. If the seed kernels are nice, plump, and filled out all the way across the head, I know it's time to harvest.

It's amazing how many seeds one sunflower can produce from a tiny seed planted just a few months ago.

Do you harvest your sunflower seeds, leave them for the birds, or a little bit of both? 🌻

“It’s always the people with no abracadabra trying to tell you what to do with your magic. P**f, be gone!” — Paula Fontana

One thing I’ve learned is that not everyone will understand your gifts, your joy, your dreams, or the way you choose to live your life. Some people spend more time criticizing than creating.

Keep shining. Keep growing. Keep doing what makes your soul happy. The right people will celebrate your magic, not try to dim it.

✨ P**f…negativity be gone!

It’s a cloudy, rainy Friday and I’m officially off duty today! 🌧️😊

I got my harvest done early, and now my plans are simple: hot shower, comfy pajamas, and straight to the movie room. At this point, I’ll be so relaxed the movies might end up watching me! 😂

After a busy week at work and in the garden, a slow day indoors sounds just about perfect.

What do you have planned for today? Are you staying productive or enjoying a little rest and relaxation?

🚨 WAIT FOR THE REVEAL! 🚨

I got got again! 🤦🏽‍♀️🍅😆

From one angle, my Old German tomato looked absolutely perfect. Big, beautiful, and almost ready for harvest...until I turned it around and discovered a critter had already helped itself to it! 😩

For some reason, my Old German tomatoes are always a favorite target. I usually put my traps away when rain is in the forecast, but it looks like it's time to bring them back out. The funny part? These garden thieves seem to have learned to leave my peppers alone! 🌶️😂

That's gardening for you—you celebrate the harvest one minute and discover you've been sharing it with wildlife the next.

Tell me I'm not the only one...what's the most disappointing thing you've found hiding on the other side of a fruit or vegetable you were excited to harvest?

Last night’s storms left the garden looking a little wild, so early this morning I’m out here cleaning up before harvesting. That’s just part of gardening—sometimes the work starts before the harvest!

Even after the wind and rain, the garden continues to provide. Today’s harvest included fresh tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, peppers, basil, onions, and more. Every basket reminds me why I love growing my own food.

I’ll also be harvesting another Mammoth sunflower head soon. One of the easiest ways I know to check if a sunflower is ready is to open a few seeds from the head. When I see nice, plump kernels inside, I know harvest time is right around the corner.

Storms may knock things around, but it’s amazing how quickly a healthy garden bounces back.

What’s growing in your garden right now, and have you harvested anything this week?
