Number one rule when you’re laying turf around a pool: you’ve gotta have a plan for the water. Because if you don’t, I promise you the water will make its own path—and you are NOT gonna like what it chooses! 😅

Nacogdoches red clay is no joke—especially right next to a swimming pool. 🏊‍♂️

If you’ve spent any time in East Texas, you already know this clay holds onto water like a sponge. Add heavy rain plus constant pool splash-out, and a standard base setup just isn’t going to cut it.

For this project, we brought in extra crushed limestone to build a much deeper foundation than usual.

Giving this job extra base depth gives all that water a place to drain through fast. It keeps the turf level, prevents squishy spots around the coping, and stops the clay underneath from shifting around over time.

When you’re installing around a pool, skimping on base material just to save a few bucks on rock is asking for trouble down the road.

Right depth. Built to last. No shortcuts. 🌿

Sub-base preparation is no joke. 🏗️

What you don’t see underneath your synthetic lawn is what actually determines how long it lasts.

Crushed limestone creates the load-bearing foundation and structural drainage system for your entire yard.

Without a heavy-duty aggregate base, shifting ground and heavy Texas rains will quickly lead to sinkholes, surface ripples, and standing water.

That’s why we recommend a full 4 inches of compacted crushed limestone base on our standard residential installations.

Skimping on sub-base depth might shave costs off gravel and excavation upfront, but cutting it down to 1 or 2 inches guarantees your turf will sag, hold moisture, and fail prematurely.

Proper depth provides the compaction density needed to support foot traffic and let water drain freely.

If a quote seems unusually low, check the base spec.

We’d always rather haul the extra tonnage and build a foundation that lasts decades than cut depth just to offer a cheaper estimate.
