PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY: WEST NILE VIRUS CONFIRMED IN FAYETTE COUNTY
The Fayette County Health Department has issued an immediate public health advisory notifying residents that West Nile virus has been confirmed in the community.
West Nile virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most infected individuals do not develop symptoms, some may experience fever, headache, body aches, or a skin rash. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological illness.
Health officials recommend the following precautions:
* Use EPA-registered insect repellent according to label instructions.
* Wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity.
* Remove standing water by emptying and cleaning water-holding containers (such as buckets, flowerpots, birdbaths, and clogged gutters) at least once per week.
* Repair damaged window and door screens, keeping doors closed when possible.
* Limit exposure during peak hours from dusk through dawn, when mosquitoes transmitting the virus are most active.
* Report areas of persistent standing water or significant mosquito activity to the health department.
Residents should seek medical attention if they develop symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, confusion, stiff neck, muscle weakness, or other concerning neurological symptoms following mosquito exposure.
The health department is monitoring the situation and providing free mosquito repellent at their office.
