Nelson Precast in Baltimore, MD created exposed aggregate panels backed by Trinic UHPC.

Challenge: There wasn’t enough space for thick panels near saltwater installations.

The team opted for slim panels featuring an exposed aggregate front and a Trinic UHPC back layer strengthened with glass fiber and glass rebar.

Managing warping proved difficult, as the two mixes shrank at different rates. By carefully spacing the dunnage and closely tracking the curing process, the panels stayed straight—once cured, they remained aligned.

Architectural Cast Stone, West Chicago IL, manipulated their UHPC mix to provide 1 hour of working time with an accelerated cure time via a combination of accelerator and heat.

The result was 12K psi stripping strength in 16 hours during winter in Chicago.

Architectural Cast Stone in Chicago, Illinois is utilizing Trinic's White UHPC Additive for their UHPC window surrounds. By providing sand and cement, ACS is effectively reducing shipping costs while ensuring mix quality.

The project aims for a striping strength of 10,000 PSI while casting in cold weather, often during late afternoons due to form changes. With a combination of low heat and Trinic Accelerator, they are achieving an impressive 12,000 PSI in just 14 hours.

Incorporating Trinic White UHPC Additive in a Horizontal Shaft Mixer

In this project, we incorporated the customer's sand and cement with Trinic White UHPC additive. Samples were crafted in our lab using the customer's materials before full-scale production commenced.

This mix weighed 1,500 lbs., the mixer has a 2 yd capacity.

Had a blast with our class demonstration project featuring a Post-Tensioned UHPC Bench.

Using grade 30, 3/8” threaded rod through PEX, we crafted tiny double tees that developed camber as we tightened the rods.

How Pozzolans Work:
• The free lime in Portland cement consumes the pozzolan particle (if the particle is small enough) turning it into CSH - Calcium Silicate Hydrate, the glue that binds concrete.
• The same high PH that causes concrete burns also makes pozzolans work.
• The smaller the particle size and the higher the silicon dioxide content the more potent the pozzolan.

Examples:
• Fly Ash – Ash from coal burning power plants, chemistry and color varies considerably depending on coal source. Type F: comes from harder coal, low calcium oxide content. Type C comes from softer coal, higher calcium oxide content.
• Slag – Comes from steel or other metal making process, limestone is used to remove impurities. Contains 40% or so Calcium Oxide.
• VCAS – Ground Residue from fiberglass scraps (glass). Larger particle size leads to slower reaction time.
• Metakaolin – Dehydroxylated form of the clay mineral kaolinite. The particle size of metakaolin is smaller than cement particles, but not as fine as silica fume. Higher water demand.
• Dark Silica Fume – 100 times finer than cement. Contains 90% or more SIO2, highly reactive. High water demand. Comes from the production of silica.
• Trinic White Silica Fume – 100 times finer than cement, white to off-white color, neutral water demand. Comes from the production of zirconium, contains zirconium oxide.

Why Use them:
• Increase concrete strength (high and ultra-high-performance concrete)
• Increase concrete density (density is proportional to strength)
• Increase color fastness
• Prevent efflorescence
• Mitigate Alkali Silica Reactivity
• Decreases permeability.
• Increase freeze / thaw durability
