How to Care for a Newly Planted Tree in Colorado 🪴🏡

The City of Golden hosted its Arbor Day celebration at the Golden Cemetery last month — free tree seedlings, a live planting demo, and families heading home with saplings in hand. It's a great tradition! Whether you picked up a tree there or planted one on your own this spring, caring for a newly planted tree is where things get harder, and the first growing season is when many young trees are lost.

Homeowners in Golden and Morrison who understand how local conditions affect watering, planting depth, mulching, and species selection give their trees a much better chance of surviving the first growing season — and becoming healthy, established trees for decades to come.

How to Prevent Tree Insects and Diseases in Jefferson County This Spring 🌳🪲

Jefferson County trees are under pressure from all sides this spring. Mountain pine beetle is building again along the Front Range, emerald ash borer was confirmed in Golden and Wheat Ridge last fall, western spruce budworm is chewing through 217,000 acres of Douglas-fir statewide, and fungal diseases like Cytospora canker and Rhizosphaera needle cast are taking hold on stressed spruces and aspens.

At least one of these threats is probably already on your property — and they all share the same vulnerability: they're easiest to stop in spring, before summer heat lets them take off. That's why the best time to prevent tree diseases and pest damage is right now.

Aphids on Trees in Colorado: Symptoms, Damage, and Treatment 🪲🌳

If you’ve ever parked under a tree in Conifer or Golden and come back to a windshield glazed with syrup, you’ve already met aphids — you just didn’t know it. That sticky film isn’t sap. It’s honeydew, a sugary residue that thousands of aphids excrete as they feed on the leaves above.

Left alone, it turns into a gray-black crust of sooty mold on everything it touches — decks, walkways, outdoor furniture, your kid’s swing set, and more.

The same cycle plays out every spring and summer in Jefferson County. Aphids on trees are one of the most common pest complaints along the Front Range — especially on aspens.

The good news is that it’s treatable, and with the right timing, you might even be able to prevent the mess before it starts.

🦌 How to Protect Your Trees from Wildlife Damage This Winter (Deer, Elk & Rodents) 🌲

If you’ve planted young trees in Colorado’s foothills, you’ve probably done everything right — proper planting, watering, mulching, and waiting patiently. And yet, come spring, some trees struggle or fail for reasons that aren’t obvious. The issue often isn’t soil, weather, or care at all. It’s routine wildlife activity that goes unnoticed until the damage is already done.

Some damage begins during the fall rutting season, when antler rubbing can weaken young trees. Other damage happens slowly over winter as animals browse or chew bark at ground level.

With large populations of elk and mule deer throughout areas like Evergreen, Conifer, Golden, and the surrounding foothills, protecting young and vulnerable trees from wildlife damage is an important part of long-term tree care.
