How to Prevent Mountain Pine Beetles Before Flight Season in Evergreen 🌲🪲

If you live in Evergreen, you've probably driven past pines that didn't make it through last year—their rust-red needles a reminder of mountain pine beetle damage. In hard-hit areas like Soda Creek, Hidden Valley, and Ruby Ranch, July is your last opportunity to protect healthy trees before beetles begin flying in August.

Once mountain pine beetles are searching for a host, the window for preventive treatment has largely closed. Protecting high-value pines now with sprays, pheromone packets, and proper watering gives them the best chance of surviving the season.

Colorado Tree Bugs to Watch This Summer 🪲

Colorado tree bugs are thriving this summer across Jefferson County's foothills. After several years of drought and below-average moisture, many pines, spruces, ash trees, and aspens are under stress and less able to defend themselves against insect attacks.

What begins as a minor pest problem can quickly escalate as weakened trees become more vulnerable to additional insects, diseases, and environmental stress. Trees weakened or killed by insect activity can also become wildfire fuel, increasing risk throughout the community.

If you've noticed bark damage, discolored needles, or dead branches on your trees, prompt action can prevent cascading infestations and protect your property.

How to Care for a Newly Planted Tree in Colorado 🪴🏡

The City of Golden hosted its Arbor Day celebration at the Golden Cemetery last month — free tree seedlings, a live planting demo, and families heading home with saplings in hand. It's a great tradition! Whether you picked up a tree there or planted one on your own this spring, caring for a newly planted tree is where things get harder, and the first growing season is when many young trees are lost.

Homeowners in Golden and Morrison who understand how local conditions affect watering, planting depth, mulching, and species selection give their trees a much better chance of surviving the first growing season — and becoming healthy, established trees for decades to come.
