A strong safety culture is built on the shared commitment of everyone on the jobsite to prioritize safety every day. It goes beyond following rules—it means recognizing hazards, communicating openly, and taking responsibility for protecting yourself and your coworkers.

Creating a positive safety culture starts with leadership setting the example and providing the tools, training, and support employees need to work safely. Every worker should feel empowered to report hazards, ask questions, and stop work if a task cannot be performed safely. Open communication and accountability help prevent incidents before they occur.

When safety becomes part of the culture, employees are more engaged, projects run more efficiently, and everyone goes home safely at the end of the day. By looking out for one another and making safe choices every day, we create a safer, stronger workplace for all.

Safety Topic of the Week: Heat Illness in Construction

Heat illness is a serious hazard in the construction industry, particularly during hot weather, high humidity, and periods of strenuous physical activity. Construction workers often perform demanding tasks outdoors or in enclosed areas with limited ventilation, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that can result in permanent injury or death if not recognized and treated immediately. Understanding the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with heat stress is essential for maintaining a safe work environment.

Preventing heat illness begins with proper hydration, rest, and awareness of environmental conditions. Workers should drink water frequently throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty, and avoid excessive consumption of energy drinks, alcohol, or beverages high in caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration. Supervisors and workers should monitor weather conditions and adjust work schedules, when possible, to limit strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Taking regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas allows the body to cool down and recover from heat exposure.

Workers should be familiar with the warning signs of heat illness. Heat cramps may cause painful muscle spasms, while heat exhaustion can include heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, and confusion. Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness and may be identified by a high body temperature, altered mental status, loss of consciousness, hot skin, or seizures. Any worker showing signs of heat stroke requires immediate emergency medical attention. While waiting for emergency responders, the individual should be moved to a cooler location, excess clothing should be removed, and cooling measures such as cold water, ice packs, or cool wet towels should be applied.

New employees and workers returning from extended absences may be more susceptible to heat illness because their bodies have not yet acclimatized to working in hot conditions. Gradually increasing workloads and allowing time for acclimatization can significantly reduce risk. Workers should also use the buddy system whenever possible, monitoring one another for signs of heat stress and reporting concerns immediately.

Heat illness is preventable when workers stay hydrated, take adequate rest breaks, wear appropriate clothing, and remain alert to changing environmental conditions and physical symptoms. By recognizing the dangers of heat exposure and taking proactive measures to protect themselves and their coworkers, construction personnel can reduce the risk of heat-related injuries and help ensure a safe and productive worksite.

Safety Topic of the Week: Fall Protection

Falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in industrial construction. Workers are frequently exposed to fall hazards while working on elevated platforms, scaffolds, ladders, structural steel, roofs, aerial lifts, and near floor openings or excavations. Even a fall from a relatively low height can result in severe injury or death. Because of these risks, all employees must recognize fall hazards, follow site-specific safety procedures, and use required fall protection equipment whenever working at heights.

Preventing falls begins with proper planning and hazard assessment before work starts. Workers should inspect their work area for unprotected edges, floor openings, unstable walking surfaces, and other potential hazards. All fall protection equipment, including harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, and anchorage points, must be inspected before each use and removed from service if damaged. Guardrails, covers, and other engineered controls should be used whenever possible to eliminate or reduce exposure to fall hazards. Employees should never bypass or remove fall protection systems without authorization.

Ladders and scaffolds must be used correctly and inspected daily by a competent person to ensure they are in a safe working condition. Workers should maintain three points of contact when climbing ladders, avoid carrying materials that interfere with safe climbing, and never stand on the top rung unless the ladder is specifically designed for that purpose. Scaffolds must be properly erected, inspected, and used in accordance with manufacturer requirements and company procedures. Good housekeeping is also essential, as tools, materials, cords, and debris can create trip hazards that increase the risk of falls.

When personal fall arrest systems are required, workers must wear and properly adjust their harnesses and ensure they are connected to approved anchorage points capable of supporting the required loads. Employees should understand their fall clearance requirements and rescue procedures before beginning work. In the event of a fall, a prompt rescue is critical to reduce the risk of suspension trauma and other complications.

Every worker is responsible for stopping and addressing unsafe conditions, reporting damaged equipment, and following all fall protection requirements. By staying aware of hazards, using proper equipment, and following established safety procedures, workers can significantly reduce the risk of falls and help ensure that everyone returns home safely at the end of the day.

Safety Topic of the Week: Snakes and Spiders, Oh My!

Snakes and spiders are common wildlife hazards that may be encountered on industrial construction sites, especially in areas where vegetation, stored materials, debris, excavations, and equipment provide shelter. Construction activities often disturb natural habitats, increasing the likelihood of worker encounters with these animals. While most snakes and spiders are not aggressive and prefer to avoid human contact, bites can occur when workers accidentally disturb or handle them.

To reduce the risk of bites, employees should always inspect their work areas before beginning tasks and use caution when handling materials that have been stored outdoors. Workers should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, long pants, and sturdy safety-toe work boots. Never place hands into dark, hidden, or confined spaces without first checking for wildlife. Gloves, boots, and clothing that have been left unattended should be shaken out before use, and work areas should be kept clean and free of debris that can attract or harbor snakes and spiders. Pipe caps on all piping is strongly encouraged to prevent the harboring of wildlife.

If a snake is observed on site, workers should stop work in the immediate area, remain calm, and keep a safe distance. The snake should be given space to move away on its own, and the sighting should be reported to supervision. Employees should never attempt to capture, kill, or handle a snake. Similarly, if spiders are found, workers should avoid direct contact and notify supervision if there are signs of an infestation or if venomous species are suspected.

In the event of a venomous snakebite, emergency medical services should be contacted immediately. The victim should remain as calm and still as possible, and any jewelry or restrictive items near the affected area should be removed due to potential swelling. The injured limb should be kept at or below heart level while awaiting medical treatment. Workers should never attempt to cut the wound, apply ice, suck out venom, or use a tourniquet unless directed by medical professionals. For spider bites, the affected area should be cleaned with soap and water, a cool compress may be applied, and the incident should be reported immediately. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms become severe or if a venomous spider is suspected.

Maintaining awareness, practicing good housekeeping, wearing proper PPE, and promptly reporting wildlife sightings are the most effective ways to prevent injuries from snakes and spiders on construction sites. Every worker plays a role in creating a safe work environment by staying alert and following established safety procedures when working in areas where wildlife may be present.

We are happy to celebrate the careers of two loved team members as they step into a well-earned retirement. Debbie and Sammy have been such an important part of the team for so long, not just for the work they’ve done, but for the way they showed up, helped others, and helped shape the spirit of SPG. It won’t feel quite the same without them around, but we’re happy they’ve earned this time to slow down and enjoy what comes next. Wishing them both lots of good days ahead!
