Two years ago, Hurricane Helene devastated communities across Western North Carolina. For our team in Charlotte, hands-on help was the only reaction that felt right.
What started as a donation drive grew into a team of 15 employees traveling to the mountains with food, tools and supplies. They packed 7–8 vehicles with food, heavy tools, tents, and heaters, and drove straight into hard-hit Spruce Pine and Bakersville to provide immediate, hands-on disaster relief.
Working alongside local community members, they helped clear downed trees, restore access to homes and support residents. The crew camped out in a field next to the local crisis center, spending cold nights singing, playing cards, and processing the day's hard work together.
Among their rescue efforts, the team helped a woman trapped in her home by downed power lines and fallen trees. The team cleared her property so she could safely walk her dog and reach her pottery studio, which led to a lasting friendship, hand-drawn thank-you cards, and a collection of her pottery that the crew cherishes.
The experience was a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is simply show up.
This time of year, we remember to be grateful for the communities that welcomed our team and for everyone who continues to support North Carolina’s recovery.
