Does stepping outside your home feel like leaving one world and entering another?

That awkward, disconnected transition is surprisingly common and can undermine the sense of unity in your property.

What's usually missing is a well-designed transitional space — a porch, a covered terrace, a pergola, a screened room. These are the in-between zones that sit at the boundary of interior rooms and the open landscape. They're not decorative extras. They're the connective tissue between the home you've built and the land it sits on. When they're missing, the whole property feels incomplete.

Good projects are rarely the work of one team operating in isolation.

We have had the pleasure of collaborating with Moody Nolan Architects on several projects over the years, and the experience reflects what well-coordinated teamwork looks like in practice — precise, communicative, and reliably delivered on time. When a landscape architect and an architect are working together from the beginning, each team's decisions support rather than complicate the other's. Building placement, exterior grades, circulation, and how a structure meets the land become coherent rather than piecemealed. That kind of coordination is not incidental to the quality of a finished project. It is central to it.

Exceptional outcomes are built on strong collaboration.

Our ongoing partnership with **Moody Nolan Architects** has continually demonstrated that when landscape architects and architects join forces from the very beginning, projects benefit from true synergy. Every decision—from site layout to pathways to the way buildings integrate with the landscape—is made with a shared vision, creating cohesive and well-resolved spaces.

Take our recent collaboration on a residential design project as an example: united planning led to efficient processes and outstanding results delivered on schedule.

This level of integration isn’t just a bonus; it’s the foundation of successful project delivery.

We were called to a project in Old Worthington after a builder had completed the exterior scope on a renovated Cape Cod home. By the time we arrived, the client had spent approximately $20,000 on work that needed to be substantially reconsidered. The deck steps had the wrong riser-to-tread ratio for exterior use — a genuine safety liability. The driveway access was misaligned. None of it was irreversible, but all of it was preventable. A coordinated site plan before construction would have cost a fraction of the rework. If you are in the early stages of planning, reach out and we will send along our project planning pack.

We recently spoke with a homeowner who had been working with a local design-build firm before reaching out to us. What they described was not a design process — it was a sales pitch. Scope grew beyond what they asked for, and the budget followed. They lost time and were essentially starting over. We hear versions of this too often. If you are in the early stages of planning a significant residential project, we have a planning pack that covers landscape site strategy from research to build. It is designed to give you clarity before design begins. Send us a message and we will get it to you.

We are currently working alongside an architect team on a home renovation that involves a significant grade change between the back of the house and the rear property line. The program is large. The constraints are tight. We have been coordinating closely on step counts and landing sizes from the rear doors — because without that level of precision from the start, the client's full wish list simply would not fit on the property. The homeowner had the foresight to bring the right team together early. That decision made this project possible. We are genuinely excited to see it through.

Earlier this year, a prospective client came back to us after a long detour. When we first spoke, they were in a hurry — they wanted a patio built quickly, on a tight budget, and were not ready to slow down for a proper design process. They tried a few design-build firms looking for faster answers. What they found instead were proposals that addressed the patio but ignored the underlying circulation and grading issues. Band-aids, essentially. They came back, slowed down, and we are now in the early conceptual stages together — with the same budget, and a plan built to actually last.

Before a buyer walks through the front door, they have already decided how they feel about a property. That first impression happens outside — in the driveway, along the walk, at the front entry. It is not just aesthetics, either. According to the National Association of Home Builders, patios are among the top two most-wanted features buyers look for — right alongside something as fundamental as a laundry room. Exterior lighting and front porches follow close behind. Outdoor spaces have moved from finishing touch to core expectation. The landscape is not the last thing buyers notice. For most, it is the first.

A question we get more than people might expect: should I invest in this property, or sell and start fresh? Over the last few years, we have worked with several clients on exactly that — feasibility studies that help them weigh whether their current property is worth developing or whether it is time to move on. In most cases, the conversation about return on investment tips the scale toward investing. And sometimes, the outcome surprises everyone: the landscape plan adds so much value that a buyer comes along with an offer that is hard to refuse. Either way, we love being part of that decision.

Every project we work on is custom — different site, different conditions, different priorities. There's no standard materials list that works across the board.

When we need turf that can handle pool water, full sun, and heavy foot traffic, or paving suited to a very specific set of site conditions, we lean on our expert suppliers, they help us dig into the specifics of each project — researching, connecting us with the right specialists, and making sure what we specify is actually available in the region right now. We firmly believe in working with our network of trusted suppliers and industry experts to ensure your project matches your specific needs.

That kind of supplier partnership makes a real difference in the quality of what ends up in your outdoor property as an extension of your home. We are committed to using every resource available to make your property the best it can be for years to come.

Here's something most people don't realize until they're already in the middle of it: when landscape planning happens at the end of a project, you often end up paying twice for the same work.

Driveways get demolished and rebuilt because elevations weren't coordinated. Slabs get cut open for irrigation lines that weren't planned in advance. Spaces end up awkward and disconnected because no one organized the site from the beginning.

These aren't unusual outcomes. They're what tends to happen when landscape architecture gets added to the project last. The work is technical, consequential, and most effective when it's part of the conversation from the start.
