Some of the most formative college experiences unfold in residence halls, where students learn to navigate independence and develop a sense of community. For HBCUs, rethinking these everyday environments presents an opportunity to place student well-being at the forefront of campus housing design.

On Thursday, October 15, Christian Joosse and Yanitza Brongers-Marrero will present Built for 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘏𝘉𝘊𝘜 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 at the 2026 National Organization of Minority Architects Annual Conference.

Drawing on research and HBCU housing case studies, they'll explore how residence hall design can better support students' mental health and sense of belonging while reflecting the cultural identity of the institutions they call home.

The University of Pittsburgh Pitt Campus Recreation reation received the Learn – Higher Education Award. Designed to make recreation and wellness more approachable for students across Pitt’s campus, the nine-story center offers a range of environments for physical activity and personal well-being. Openings between floors create visual connections throughout the building, and continuous glazing along the façade brings natural light and sweeping campus views into recreation spaces. Built into a steep hillside, the center also connects Pitt’s upper and lower campus through a series of interior and exterior pathways, making movement through the building part of the everyday student experience.

The Greater Dayton School received an Honorable Mention in the Learn – K–12 category. The school brings learning and wellness under one roof, reflecting a whole-child approach to education that recognizes students’ needs beyond the classroom. Flexible learning environments support both collaborative and independent learning, and a light-filled central learning stair serves as a multifunctional space for group activities and informal gathering. An on-site wellness center brings essential healthcare services into the school day, helping remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ health needs alongside their academic development.

Congratulations to our project teams and partners on this recognition!

Each year, roughly 1,000 young people in Ohio transition out of foster care as they enter adulthood. Finding stable housing is one of the first challenges they face as they begin navigating life on their own. Among 19-year-olds leaving foster care in Ohio, more than one in four reported experiencing homelessness between the ages of 17 and 19, according to the Ohio Housing Finance Agency.

As we continue our conversation around housing this World Habitat Day, we’re highlighting Columbus Scholar House for Former Foster Youth, a 30-unit community designed for young adults ages 18–24 with foster care histories who are pursuing higher education.

Located on Columbus’ Near East Side, the residential community provides fully furnished studio apartments for residents pursuing full-time degrees at nearby universities. Shared study and gathering spaces complement the private residences, with counseling, tutoring and financial literacy services available on site to support residents as they continue their education and move toward greater independence.

The project grew from a collaboration between Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority and Columbus State Community College e, with Ohio foster care youth and alumni contributing early in its development. Five years after opening, Scholar House continues to provide young adults with the stability and support they need not only to pursue higher education, but to build a more independent future for themselves.

Everyone deserves to have a safe place to call home.

Housing provides the foundation people need to build their lives and pursue a more secure future. Yet for too many people, a safe and affordable home remains out of reach. As architects, we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to help make quality housing available to more people.

This year’s theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”, asks architects to consider their role in expanding access to safe, dignified housing.

The Legacy Project is one way we’ve put that responsibility into practice. Developed in response to the growing housing crisis, the initiative provides a newly built home to a family facing housing insecurity in each city where we have an office. The program is structured to create a path to long-term homeownership by making both the initial purchase and ongoing costs of homeownership more attainable. Working with local housing and community organizations, we help secure a site and put the pieces in place to make each Legacy House possible.

Each home is designed to make a compact footprint feel spacious and comfortable. Double-height living spaces and ample windows bring natural light deep inside, creating a greater sense of openness. To support long-term performance and ease of maintenance, durable materials and efficient systems are incorporated throughout. Finally, each home is thoughtfully sited within its neighborhood, helping it feel both welcoming and connected to its larger community.

What moves a campus project from an idea to an investment an institution can get behind?

At the 2026 SCUP Southern Regional Conference, Jenn Rittler and Jonné Smith will join Morehouse College's Sule Carpenter to unpack the planning behind the College’s Campus of the Future.

Using Morehouse College's new Campus Center as a case study, the session will explore how iterative planning, stakeholder engagement and strategic phasing helped translate a long-term campus vision into actionable priorities, build support for investment and position the project within a broader strategy for future development.

Moody Nolan has been named to ForbesBLK’s 25 Top Businesses to Watch in 2026—an inaugural recognition honoring Black-owned companies across the country for their growth and influence within their industries.

What began as a single office in Columbus in 1982 has grown into a national practice with 12 offices. And while our reach has expanded, the purpose behind our work has remained the same: improving lives through design.

More than four decades later, that purpose continues to guide what we do and where we go next.

Thank you, . We’re honored to be included in this inaugural group of industry leaders.

For the third consecutive summer, our New York office partnered with the NYC School Construction Authority () High School Summer Internship Program to welcome two talented high school students for a six-week introduction to architecture and design.

Over the course of the program, the students worked on their own residential design project to experience and learn the design workflows used in professional practice. Special thanks to New York studio team members Marlenn Lopez and Nika(Mo) Mo, AIA, PMP for leading the program’s curriculum, and to Jonathan Nowlin for leading site tours.

The interns also joined CEO Jonathan Moody and team members from across the firm for coffee chats, where they learned about the many different roles within architecture as well as how varied backgrounds and experiences can shape a career path.

Programs like this play an important role in building the next generation of design talent by giving students meaningful exposure to architecture early on. We’re grateful for the chance to be part of that introduction and for SCA’s continued partnership in making it possible.

Thank you to NY Studio

Each September, HBCU Week connects high school students with HBCUs by offering a firsthand look at their history and legacy, along with what an HBCU education can offer. Delaware State University has long been part of HBCU week, hosting programs and events that bring prospective students onto an HBCU campus to engage and experience campus culture firsthand.

This year, the 10th annual HBCUweek Battle of the Bands will take place at Alumni Stadium, where our team is working with DSU on athletics facility improvements designed to support not only Hornet Athletics, but also major university events like this one.

Momentum continues to build at Texas Southern University. Last week, TSU broke ground on the Catalyst for Urban Transformation and Nabrit Science Center, marking a major new phase of its campus master plan. When complete, the project will add new academic and research space as the university pursues Research 1 status.

For us, the week is also a reminder of the role a campus fabric plays in the HBCU experience. Across more than 35 HBCU campuses, we’ve seen how investments in academics and athletics become part of a larger campus story, creating settings for the traditions and shared experiences students carry with them long after they leave.

What if a school were designed around the full range of resources and support children need to succeed?

The Greater Dayton School began with an ambitious idea: remove as many barriers to learning as possible by expanding what a school provides.

That premise reached well beyond the curriculum, informing both the learning environment and the broader network of support built into the school, from healthcare and nutrition to childcare and enrichment.

Our latest case study explores how design can support whole-child development and advance a model of education where educational equity includes the broader systems of care and support surrounding each child.
