How do you introduce something new to a historic property without losing what makes it special?
That was at the heart of this project.

Working alongside Will Lehnert of Outdoor Space Design, the vision was to create an outdoor living environment that complemented the home’s Tudor architecture and mature landscape while feeling as though it had always belonged.

Bluestone connects the home, pool, and new pool house. Limestone accents create subtle transitions throughout the property. A bespoke gate and fencing welcome you into the garden, while layered plantings, landscape lighting, and detailed millwork bring structure and character to the space.

Even the restored crushed stone pathway was considered, leading through boxwoods toward the sound of the fountain beyond.

The result is a property where it can be difficult to tell where the original landscape ends and the new work begins.

Can one property feel both timeless and modern?
This estate proves that it can.

At the front of the home, the landscape takes its cues from the traditional architecture. Manicured hedges, flowering perennials, curved garden beds, and seasonal color create a stately arrival that feels appropriate to the character of the home.

Step into the backyard, and the experience changes.

Clean lines, geometric hardscapes, restrained plantings, a modern fire feature, and an integrated outdoor audio-visual system create a more contemporary setting designed for relaxing and entertaining.

The two spaces don’t need to look the same to feel connected. Each responds to its purpose while respecting the architecture and character of the property.

Some properties tell you exactly where you should sit.
For this home, it was the view across the golf course and the opportunity to create a place where mornings could begin outside and evenings could end around the fire as the sun went down.

Working alongside landscape designer Will Lehnert of Outdoor Space Design, we helped transform that vision into an outdoor living space designed for both entertaining and everyday enjoyment.

A custom outdoor kitchen with natural gas, waterlines, and a granite countertop makes hosting outside easy. Custom limestone and a bluestone patio give the space a substantial, established feel, while lush garden beds and estate-level planters bring softness and seasonal color throughout the property.

At the center, the firepit creates a natural gathering place with one of the best seats in the house.
It’s a space that can host a full evening with friends just as easily as it can accommodate two people sitting by the fire watching the last golfers of the day.
That’s always the goal. Not simply creating a beautiful backyard, but designing a space around the moments our clients want to have there.

How do you completely transform a backyard in German Village while still making it feel like it belongs to the historic home?

That was the challenge behind this project.
Working alongside landscape architect Sue Grant of Jacobs Grant Design Ltd., we helped create an outdoor environment where this family could entertain, spend summer days poolside, and make memories together, all while respecting the character of the original property.
Some of our favorite details are also the ones that required the most thought.

The intricate boxwood parterre scroll at the front of the home was installed with an incredible level of precision to honor the traditional character of the Village. A permeable driveway helps manage drainage while supporting the homeowners’ desire for more environmentally conscious design.

Behind the scenes, an extensive network of wiring and conduits was concealed below grade, a custom irrigation system was designed to provide appropriate watering for individual plant material, and an advanced FX lighting system gives the homeowners control over how the property comes to life after dark.

The finished space may feel effortless, but underneath it is an incredible amount of planning, craftsmanship, and technology.

That’s what we love about projects like this. Preserving what makes a historic property special while creating something that works beautifully for the family living there today.

Tucked behind the brick and historic charm of German Village is a garden designed to feel worlds away from the city.

The homeowners wanted a peaceful place to come home to between busy workdays and travel, so together with landscape designer Will Lehnert of Outdoor Space Design, we transformed their outdoor space into a private retreat.

At the center, a hand-selected armillary anchors the formal oval lawn, surrounded by patterned stone walkways with limestone cobble detailing. Custom trellises soften the home’s expansive brick exterior, while lush gardens create layers of color, texture, and privacy.

And when the sun goes down, thoughtfully placed landscape lighting gives the garden an entirely different atmosphere.

It’s proof that you don’t need acres of property to create an extraordinary outdoor experience. Sometimes, a thoughtfully designed city garden can become the perfect escape.
