This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms we enjoy every day, and we are forever grateful for their sacrifice.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave everything for our nation.

From all of us at Igel, thank you to our fallen heroes and the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

ODOT SR 315 Slide Repair – Delaware County

This project is called a “slip repair.” The original roadway was cut into the side of the hill/riverbank. The outside of the road consists of dirt fill placed along the hillside to create the level road width. Over time, that wedge of dirt can break off and “slip” down into the river. ODOT monitors roadways for signs of failure (and although it hurts, thank you, gas tax!) and mitigates the issues it finds.

ODOT designed piles — drilled holes filled with concrete with a steel beam inserted — to create something like a “picket fence” to hold that wedge from slipping.

Our crews have shut down the road — sorry for the 120-day inconvenience — while drilling and installing a line of more than 600 piles to prevent a future failure.

Although inconvenient, completing this repair is far less costly and disruptive than having the road slip into the river!

We are proud to help keep our infrastructure in great condition. It takes teamwork and planning to drill, transport materials, and complete a job like this!

Throwback Thursday
Scioto Greenways- 2013- in Downtown Columbus

The first action of this project was the removal of the low head dam. It would drop the water level and expose the river mussels, a species critical to water quality and ecosystem health. We waited until the river mussels were past their mating season, and then volunteered with the biologists to relocate the mussels. We helped collect and relocate them by hand, saving around 4,500 mussels. The effort—often called “saving the mussels” made its way to our crew’s t-shirt!

The next day we began demolition of the dam for this transformational project on the river.

Two times the fun!

We started the paving season off with a double crew laying Roller Compacted Concrete on a large project. They are challenging each other to get the best day in. It’s not often two crews are side by side, but it is good to share best practices and build the team.

Established in 1911, 2026 marks our 115th year in business!

While the methods, equipment, and technologies have evolved—from horse-drawn wagons in 1911 to GPS equipment today—the company remains committed to the well-being of the community, its employees, and the customers it serves.

Over the past 115 years, five generations of family ownership have led the company. Our continued success, however, is driven by the dedication of the thousands of people who have given their best every day.

Reaching out to the next generation.

Over the past month, we have had the opportunity to attend career fairs at Ohio Northern University, The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati, and Ohio University, as well as visit technical and trade schools around Ohio. It was a great experience connecting with so many talented students, sharing more about our organization, and discussing the exciting opportunities available in this great profession!

Concrete out of the fog…

Kyle’s crew faced some new challenges but pulled together to complete a 20,000 SF pour — even though they had trouble seeing from one end to the other!

Planning, teamwork, and communication make the work so much more fun.

This week, George J. Igel & Co., Inc. proudly recognizes Women in Construction (WIC) Week, an industry-wide celebration dedicated to highlighting the contributions, talent, and leadership that help drive construction forward.

WIC Week gives us an opportunity to reflect on the diverse skills, collaboration, and dedication that strengthen our teams and elevate the work we deliver across every project.

Gratitude is one of our values (Integrity, Excellence, and Leadership being the others). We received the below message from a tradesperson. We work hard to set an example and hold each other accountable. When you have a day where everyone has the right attitude and it all comes together, it is so rewarding — even energizing!

“Days like today are why I love working for IGEL. Had an amazing day… just wanted to let someone know.

The nature of construction requires workers to trust their colleagues with their safety. Projects often involve complex coordination, where one person's work depends directly on another's, fostering a ‘we’ rather than ‘I’ mentality. There is also a deep, shared pride in building something physical and permanent, which strengthens the bond between team members.

Today embodied that. Everyone jumped in. Your team embodies every bit of what it means to be a family/team.

At times, we spend more time with IGEL than we do with our own families, but to be a part of all of this is truly amazing.

I wanted to thank you for allowing me to be a part of your crew.

You see, I’ve worked on all sides of it here at IGEL — concrete, paving, curb, Bidwell, dirt, and even in the shop. Yet one thing remains the same all around:

The culture and the feeling of being respected and appreciated.

You guys have an amazing atmosphere, and I am grateful.

I’m sure there have been many times that you hear about the negative side of things. I wanted to tell you about the positive.

Well, take care and be safe.

From a grateful teammate.”

Lower Olentangy Relief Structure

The original subcontractor on this project backed out of building this difficult structure. Our team jumped in with both feet and planned — and planned again — beginning in May of ’25 and completing it this month. Just eight concrete pours, but all while working 15 feet down in a city street around an existing live 90” sewer. The sewer was cut out and removed inside the new structure (yes — YUCK!), and a weir was installed to measure sewer flows and give the City of Columbus information to better manage storm systems.

A long project, great teamwork, and a BIG accomplishment — done safely. Now it is buried out of sight, but the effort to build this will not be forgotten by those involved.

A THANK YOU to the residents for their patience in dealing with the inconvenience of a hole in their street.
