This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign by NFPA is “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention" which works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safer while cooking.

We encourage all residents to embrace the 2023 Fire Prevention Week theme, and follow these key cooking safety tips:

• Always use cooking equipment—air fryers, slow cookers, electric skillets, hot plates, griddles, etc.—that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on where and how to use appliances.
• Remember to unplug all appliances when not in use.
• Check cords regularly for damage. Do not use any appliance with a damaged cord.

Slow Cooker
A slow cooker is designed to be left on while you do other things, even things outside of the home.
However, there are few safety tips to keep in mind:
• Keep things that could catch fire away from the slow cooker.
• Make sure the slow cooker is in a place where it won’t get bumped. If the lid gets dislodged,
the liquid could boil away, which could cause the appliance to overheat and create a fire

Pressure Cooker
A pressure cooker is designed to cook food faster than a stovetop or oven. Because it uses hot steam and pressure to cook food it is important that they are used properly to prevent burns.
• Place the cooker in an open space to give enough room for the steam to ventilate.
• Never cover the steam release valve on the pressure cooker.
• Do not leave the home when using a pressure cooker.

Air Fryers
• Give your air fryer enough space. The air vents release heat and need airflow.
• Do not leave the home when using the air fryer.
• Make sure you clean grease and food debris after every use. Unplug and allow to cool completely before cleaning.

Hot Plate, Griddle and Electric Skillet
• Stay with the hot plate, griddle, or electric skillet when cooking.
• Do not touch the surface of a hot plate, griddle, or electric skillet, as it could burn you.
• Unplug a hot plate, griddle, or electric skillet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow the appliance to cool before cleaning it.

If you have any doubts about fighting a small fire:

Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from outside the home.

Five Things to Know, Sept. 11, 2023
The American Legion

1. Americans are looking back on the horror and legacy of 9/11, gathering Monday at memorials, firehouses, city halls and elsewhere to observe the 22nd anniversary of the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil. Commemorations stretch from the attack sites — at New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania — to Alaska and beyond. President Joe Biden is due at a ceremony on a military base in Anchorage.

2. A vacant nine-story residential tower provided the setting Monday for a memorial stair climb at this airlift hub in western Tokyo, an event that’s become synonymous with 9/11 commemorations in the U.S. and beyond. About 100 people gathered at Yokota for the event, part of a widespread tradition 22 years after the terrorist attacks that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and killed hundreds more at the Pentagon and in a downed airliner in Pennsylvania.

3. A North Korean train presumably carrying leader Kim Jong Un has departed for Russia for a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, South Korean media said Monday. Citing unidentified South Korean government sources, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported that the train likely left the North Korean capital of Pyongyang on Sunday evening and that a Kim-Putin meeting is possible as early as Tuesday. The Yonhap news agency and some other media published similar reports. Japan’s Kyodo news agency cited Russian officials as saying that Kim was possibly heading for Russia in his personal train.

4. President Joe Biden closed a visit to Vietnam on Monday by spotlighting new business deals and partnerships between the two countries and paying respects at a memorial honoring his late friend and colleague Sen. John McCain, who endured a lengthy imprisonment in Hanoi during the Vietnam War. Biden met with Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, who also accompanied Biden to a quick drop by at a meeting of business leaders. Biden also sat down with President Võ Văn Thưởng, who hosted the U.S. president for a formal state luncheon. The two sides are looking to strengthen their partnership amid shared concerns about China’s assertiveness in the Pacific.

5. Two foreign aid workers were reportedly killed in eastern Ukraine on Sunday as Russian shelling hit a van carrying a team of four working with a Ukrainian nongovernmental organization, while dozens of Russian drones targeted Kyiv and wounded at least one civilian. The four volunteers from the Road to Relief group, which helps evacuate wounded people from front-line areas, were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the town of Chasiv Yar, the organization said on its Instagram page.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many volunteers place American flags on the graves of military personnel in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States.

Dear American Legion Family members and friends,

The American Legion’s commitment to “preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in all wars” is without question. It is explicitly stated in the Preamble to our organization’s constitution and recited by our members at every official American Legion meeting.

The third Saturday in May is set aside not just to honor those who served in war, but the men and women who comprise the greatest military on the planet. The first Armed Forces Day was announced on Aug. 31,1949, by American Legion Past National Commander Louis Johnson, who was serving as the secretary of defense at the time.

There are other days in which we honor our military. Memorial Day is when we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Veterans Day is when we honor all veterans, regardless of where and when they served. Armed Forces Day marks what President Truman called “readiness for any eventuality.”

It is significant that Armed Forces Day was observed after the horrors of World War II and prior to our entry into Korea. It recognized that there are always dangers and sacrifices involved with military service and that America should always be appreciative of those defending our freedom in both war and peace.

Some members of the Armed Forces don’t really feel that Veterans Day is for them. I have to confess that when I was in the Navy, I thought of myself as more of a sailor than a veteran. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The American Legion believes that you are a veteran from the day you report to basic training. It is why you are eligible to join our organization from day one. It is also when you start following orders from your military superiors and delivering on your oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies.”

So while there is more than one day to acknowledge veterans, Armed Forces Day is the time to honor our military, whether members are on the battlefield or in bootcamp.

The American Legion has always recognized that a strong national defense is vital to the prevention of war. It is why the founders of The American Legion included defense as one of our organization’s four pillars.

Gen. Omar Bradley described the need for a strong military in 1951. “Real security,” he said, “lies in the prevention of war – and today that hope can come only through adequate preparedness.”

Simply put, you cannot have true security without an outstanding Armed Forces. In this capacity, the United States is truly blessed. Let’s remember that on May 20.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

Mother's Day is to celebrate and honor all mothers around the world, the mother of every family and every individual. This day is to appreciate all a women do for their child. As well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

Remember when the Peace Corps adopted the slogan “The toughest job you’ll ever love”? No offense, Peace Corps, but that adage is more appropriate for motherhood — a job that is ever-changing and frequently exasperating. Moms don’t get days off, nor do they receive handsome salaries or generous pensions. Instead, their rewards come in the form of sticky kisses, necklaces made of elbow macaroni, and the satisfaction of seeing their children grow up to be happy, healthy adults. That’s probably not adequate compensation — so give Mom an extra hug or a special gift on Mother’s Day... Sachon, L. (2020, May 10). Mother’s Day - May 10.
