Final touch ups are complete on this very special copper range hood. Thank you .builders for the opportunity to do this custom piece. Custom patina work can be a journey full of highs and lows. It is as exciting as it is frustrating. Seeing it come together makes all the hard work worth it.

Huge thanks to the team from Miami University who built this awesome portfolio book for us last semester. Working with them on this allowed us to see how others would bring creative input to what we do every day, and it allowed them to study a business and provide value in a structured environment for their classwork. It was an excellent experience that we'd love to do again in the future.

With still a bit left to do here, we’re enjoying seeing this beautiful fireplace surround coming together.

Truly one of my greatest passions is seeing the beauty in natural materials. Whether we’re looking at natural stone, wood, or metals, there is so much more character and life than meets the eye. Working with metals like this to display the natural materials excites me, and it makes me happy to know that others will appreciate the beauty in these materials too when they see our work.

This year I want to make more things that showcase these materials. I’d like to make wall pieces to be hung like paintings. I want to bring this subtle art in front of people who may otherwise never know how exciting these materials can be. With custom patina work, there is truly no limit to what could be created.

We’ve been hard at work on a large range of projects lately and some of the smaller projects can slip through unnoticed on our socials sometimes.

This one is a copper countertop with a hand applied acid etched patina. The process is often 2 steps forward 1 step back as we tease character and interesting features out of the material only to etch them away with the next layer. There are many ways to apply acid solutions and each can result in unique outcomes. Exploring patina work is always a labor of love.

Here’s a series of photos at varying steps of of the process as the acid develops, as the sheet is buffed down, and the product moves through each iteration of aging.

We enjoyed the vibrant turmeric yellow that developed on the sheet when the acid was first applied. Surprises are around every corner when we do patina work.

This project was for one of our absolute favorite clients, Danielle. Danielle had an appetite for something creative and out of the ordinary. These can be rare opportunities for us to try something we've never done before. This railing presented unique challenges from end to end that forced us to adapt our typical processes and ways of thinking. Everything from the way we set expectations during the design phase, down to managing the exceptional rigidity created by this array of angled spindles.

Danielle trusted the process as we worked our way through these new challenges and I'm so happy that she was in love with the end product we were able to create for her. She came to use with questions, expressing genuine curiosity about the work we do and how we do it.

Opportunities to express our work as art, not just a commodity can be a extremely rewarding. It can also be difficult to coerce these opportunities into a typical business model. The value of our time, vision, and expertise is dictated considerably by the specifics of the work at hand. As far as art is concerned, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the budget can be tailored to the desires of each and every client.

This is a project that genuinely excites me and I'm happy we get to explore new ideas like these from time to time. I hope these final photos will resonate with some of you as well. There are many compelling possibilities at the fringes of what we are accustomed to.

Sometimes, the best notes are the ones you can't lose! Alyssa has recently taken to jotting down quick measurements and reminders she can't forget onto her arm. The team has since followed suit, and now anyone on a given day will have lots of sharpie on their arm or hand.
