This deck was over 15 years old and had some real issues across three separate sections. On the ground-level areas, the joists had been built straight into the dirt with no real drainage. That led to constant moisture and a lot of rot.

I repaired the upper section back in the winter after it started getting dangerous to walk on. The rest had to wait until spring.

First up was a large deck island that needed major work. About half the frame was too far gone to save. I tore it down, rebuilt the frame, replaced all the deck boards, and got everything painted.

Another section on the main deck had to be pulled apart. That’s when I found something unexpected — a full-on nest with a dead opossum’s pelt and tail, plus a big pile of trash and plant debris packed underneath. Some of the joists were too compromised to hold screws, so I sistered new 2x6 boards onto them for extra support. Then I replaced the damaged deck boards and repainted those spots, along with any areas where the old paint was peeling.

Everything was rebuilt using ground contact pressure-treated lumber and 3-inch spiral shank nails to make sure it holds up long-term.

A lot of folks don’t realize how common hidden rot is. You might think your deck’s fine until the boards come up and the real damage shows. If your deck is feeling soft in spots or just hasn’t been looked at in a while, it’s worth checking out before it becomes a hazard.

The client wanted the tile in the laundry room to continue through the mudroom, up the stairs, and into the closet and bathroom.

I removed the old linoleum and baseboards, scraped up all the adhesive, laid the new tile, and got it grouted. The client is planning to handle the baseboards and final details on their own, so I left everything prepped and ready for the next step. I also removed the old leaking toilet and updated the fl**ge preparing for a new toilet install.
