Not every expensive design upgrade is a smart decision.
Full height stone backsplashes are a perfect example.
Yes, they look incredible.
They also turn something relatively simple to update into something extremely expensive to change.
A traditional backsplash can be replaced when:
- Your style changes
- The color dates the kitchen
- The material becomes damaged
- You want to refresh the room before selling
When the countertop material continues all the way up the wall, the commitment becomes much larger.
Custom home clients should absolutely choose features they love.
But permanent, expensive design decisions deserve a different level of scrutiny than paint, lighting, or tile.
The question is not only: “Do I love this today?”
It is also: “How difficult will this be to change if I do not love it ten years from now?”
Should resale and future flexibility influence design decisions in a forever home?
