Some “IAQ problems” are not IAQ problems.

They may involve humidity, temperature, controls, noise, maintenance, air distribution, or aging equipment.

But once a classroom complaint is labeled as an Indoor Air Quality issue, the response can quickly go in the wrong direction.

Add more outdoor air.
Buy new equipment.
Pursue a more extensive retrofit than the problem requires.

Yet the complaint remains.

A classroom can meet ventilation requirements and still feel too humid after rain, too cold near the windows, too loud when the unit ramps up, or drafty under a diffuser.

IAQ is an important part of Indoor Environmental Quality. But it is only one part.

Before school districts invest in equipment changes, facility teams need to understand what is happening in the classroom, what may be driving it.

In this guide, we explain what to check first when a classroom feels stale, humid, drafty, uncomfortable, or too loud.

Virginia’s new IAQ law is creating an important moment for VA K-12 schools across the Commonwealth.

Yesterday, our team spent the day with K-12 school district leaders talking about indoor air quality, inspections, reporting, and next steps.

It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet some new ones. Across districts, the goal was the same: make sense of what the law means for their buildings, their teams, their budgets, and their school boards.

These teams are truly dedicated to providing healthier indoor environments for students and staff.
A special thank you to VSPMA for bringing this group together and creating space for such timely discussions.

We look forward to the annual conference in October.

Some events are bigger than the game.

On June 4, Havtech will join the Breakthrough T1D Mid-Atlantic Real Estate Games at The St. James in Springfield, VA.

Yes, there will be friendly competition.

Yes, there will be teams, customers, partners, and plenty of familiar faces from across the commercial real estate community.

But the real reason everyone is showing up is bigger than any scoreboard.

The Games help Breakthrough T1D support type 1 diabetes research, advocacy, and support, and the Havtech team is proud to be part of that effort as a sponsor and participant.

It also feels fitting to gather at The St. James, a facility that means something special to our team. Havtech supported key building systems behind several of its high-performance athletic spaces, including the natatorium, ice rink, and other areas throughout the complex.

Showing up for the industry is important.

Showing up for a cause is even better.

We look forward to being part of it.

Before a school district spends money on IAQ upgrades, it helps to know what the HVAC system is doing.

Not what it was designed to do.

That means checking things like:
• Outdoor air delivery
• Filter performance
• Classroom airflow
• CO₂, temperature, and humidity trends
• Whether controls are responding the way they should

Without that baseline, school districts can end up fixing the wrong problem.
Adding more equipment
More airflow
More cost
Yet still the same complaints

ASBO MD 2026 confirmed what we’re seeing across the K-12 market: school facility teams are being asked to improve building performance while managing aging systems, tighter budgets, and higher expectations for indoor environmental quality.

This week, we spent time with Maryland school facility leaders, engineering teams, partners, and old and new friends talking about what districts are managing every day:
▪️comfort complaints
▪️ventilation questions
▪️limited budgets
▪️pressure to make the right decisions for students, staff, and long-term building performance.

One highlight was Tim Dorman’s session, “Is Your School's Environment Helping or Hurting Student Success? Future-Proof IEQ Without Blowing Your Budget.”

His message was clear: better indoor environmental quality starts with understanding what is happening in the building and looking at ventilation, filtration, controls, equipment, and operations together.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and shared what you’re seeing in your schools. We’re grateful to be part of the Maryland ASBO community.
