APPRENTICESHIP SPOTLIGHT: MEET BROOKE 🍞

Brooke built this in September. Yes, this.

Figured white oak sides. Spanish cedar tambour slats that roll open and closed, plus a Spanish cedar top, back, and bottom. Swipe to see the inside: the tambour slats are connected with bandana fabric, so the door rolls and looks great open. 👀

Brooke is one of many women making things at Sawdust Studios, through both our Apprenticeship and Studio Memberships. This shop is for everyone who wants a seat at the workbench. No gatekeeping. No judgment. Just people discovering what their hands can do.

This bread box isn't for sale, but you can see it in person at our Columbia Farmers Market booth. Come check it out and tell Brooke she crushed it. 🙌

From rough walnut slab to birthday gift. Meet the first project in our new Made at Sawdust series. 🎨🪵

When member Max wrote to us, he explained how it started:

"My girlfriend wanted to get into pastel artwork and it's her birthday so I wanted to give it a shot."

He picked out a rough-sawn walnut slab from our back stock and milled it himself, using what he learned in our safety course. Then he spent a month turning it into a one-of-a-kind artist's box, with brass hinges, a leather strap that holds her sketchbook in the lid, a fitted tray for pencils and tape, and two removable trays with full sets of pastels.

He'd never built anything like it before, and he was honest about what made it possible:

"I wouldn't have even tried if I didn't find a 24/7 workspace with proper tools, there's no way I could have done anything like this in my apartment with a Dremel. It was only doable in a month because I could come after work and stay late, and also because you guys were around to provide guidance when I had questions."

That's exactly why we're here. Max, thank you for sharing this one with us. We hope the birthday was a hit! ❤️

Meet Joe.

A few weeks ago he committed to learning woodworking through our apprenticeship. Under Cruz's instruction, he just finished the Spanish Cedar Tambour Bread Box.

"The reason I joined Sawdust Studios was the quality of the equipment. The reason I joined the apprenticeship program was the quality of the instruction. Also, Cruz and Zach make the classes fun. It has been a great experience."
