Just got the railings installed on these three decks, so that’s another job wrapped up for the summer. 👍

The homeowner specifically wanted to go with MoistureShield composite decking and pressure-treated structural lumber. I’ll be honest… I’m not a massive fan.

Douglas fir finished with a rich-colored stain would’ve looked amazing, but when you’ve got a budget to work with, you work with what you’ve got and still do your best to make it look good.

That said, I found the deck boards scratched pretty easily, get very slippery when wet, and the expansion and contraction has been more than I’ve ever seen with a composite board.

If I had to do it again, I’d probably stick with Trex.

Sorry, all you Trex haters… 😆

Still, the railings are on, the decks are finished, and I reckon the whole thing came out looking pretty bloody good. 👍

I’m a little sad to say we’ve officially wrapped up our latest project… although I’m hoping I’ll get invited back long enough to take some finished photos before they change the locks. 😂

I say finished, not final, because we’ve already been asked to return this fall for some new and exciting projects—which I’m taking as a good sign that we didn’t completely wear out our welcome!

It’s been a fantastic project from start to finish. Great clients, actually I’d be rude not to say great friends, plenty of challenges along the way, and most importantly, a finished space they love. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust they put in us and willing to take a little risk along the way.

But no time to put the feet up and make a cup of tea just yet… ☕️

We’re straight into the next one, a large remodel, addition and garage/mother-in-law with new challenges, new experiences, and plenty of opportunities to stand around scratching my head wondering why the plans looked so much easier on paper. I’m happy that all our framers are busy getting other jobs wrapped up for the winter and giving me the opportunity to get this one done by myself.
Well maybe with a little help.

And with the business continuing to grow, we’re now looking for some interior design help. Apparently, being able to build it doesn’t automatically mean I’m qualified to decide which shade of “off-white” is the right shade of off-white. Who knew? 😂

I get asked a lot what I enjoy most about being a builder and contractor. Naturally, I usually start with the projects because who doesn’t enjoy a good set of plans and the occasional miracle when everything actually lines up without a small crisis or two?

But if I’m being honest, that’s only half the story. The real reason I love the job is the people. You build proper relationships with homeowners and subcontractors along the way. There’s something quite special about working with trades who care about their craft as much as you do and even more special when the homeowners are genuinely pleased with the result… which, let’s be honest, isn’t always guaranteed when you’ve lived through the process together.

That’s what makes the job worthwhile. It’s not just the work it’s the people, the teamwork, and those rare, magical days when everything goes exactly to plan and no one’s waiting on “that one part” that was definitely ordered weeks ago.

This last job we’re wrapping up is one of those times ten. The homeowners have long since stopped being “clients” and have become proper friends. The kind you’ll keep for life… mainly because after everything they’ve seen, it would be too risky to let them go.

We were recently asked if we could do something about a few structural beams and posts that, to put it politely, weren’t exactly easy on the eyes. Our response, naturally, was “Absolutely, leave it with us.”

For this little transformation we used circular-sawn fir and larch from our local mill yard. The corners were cut at a tidy 45 degrees, then glued and stapled together so the finish looks sharp rather than something knocked together after a long lunch.

To bring it all together we treated it with a dark oak Danish oil, which really pulls the grain out and gives it that rich, proper timber look, you will never know that ugly but well needed glued laminated timber (glulam) is even there.

It’s still drying at the moment, so you’ll have to hold your horses for the final install photos. But safe to say those beams have gone from “structurally necessary nuisance” to “rather handsome feature,” dare I say it, "which is always the goal".
