If you look up "Dry Stack Masonry" in a textbook, you’ll get a boring definition about gravity and friction.

But if you ask a homeowner in the Flathead Valley who has had to repair their concrete wall three times in ten years, they’ll give you a different definition: Peace of Mind.

Here is the engineering reality:
1. The "Hydraulic" Problem
In Montana, the ground freezes hard. When water gets trapped behind a sealed concrete or mortared wall, it turns into ice and expands. That pressure (hydrostatic pressure) is strong enough to snap reinforced concrete like a twig. That’s why you see those ugly zigzag cracks on walls around town.

2. The Dry Stack Solution
A dry stack wall has no mortar to crack. It is held together by the weight of the stone and the skill of the mason.

• It’s Permeable: The entire face of the wall is a drain. Water flows right through it, meaning no pressure ever builds up.

• It’s Flexible: When the ground heaves in February, the stones subtly shift and settle. When the ground thaws in April, they settle back. The wall "breathes" with the landscape instead of fighting it.
We don't build dry stack just because it looks rugged and beautiful (though it does). We build it because, in this climate, it is simply the superior technology.

Build it once. Enjoy it forever.

Some projects are heavy lifting; others are pure patience. 🧩🔨

We just wrapped up this custom flagstone entrance and walkway system connecting the driveway, front door, and garage side entrance. Usually, we lean toward large, natural slabs for a rugged look—but this client had a specific vision (and a specific pile of stone!).

They requested we use smaller, customer-provided flagstone. The challenge? Making hundreds of small pieces sit perfectly flat with zero trip hazards. It takes a lot more time and finesse to keep gaps consistent with smaller stones, but the result is a smooth, mosaic-style finish.

It was a race against the clock to get this done before the client’s big party, but the crew pulled it off. 🏁

Most people don't realize that standard concrete walls are only rated to last about 50 to 100 years before they start crumbling.

But Dry Stack Stone? That plays by a different set of rules.

Pictured here is Skara Brae in Scotland. These walls were built in 3100 BC. That is older than the Pyramids of Giza. And the craziest part? They were built without a single drop of cement or mortar.

They are held together by two things: Gravity and Friction.

Because there is no rigid mortar to crack, the walls have been able to "flex" and settle for over 5,000 years without falling down.

When my family and I moved to Columbia Falls, I brought this specific technique with me because I believe in building things that last. When I stack a wall on your property, I’m not just building it for you to enjoy this summer. I’m building it for your great-grandchildren to play on.

If you are looking to invest in a legacy for your property—not just a quick fix—let’s chat about your project for this Spring.

Precision is in the details. 📐🔨
We recently completed this special request for a client who wanted a unique seating area that didn’t just sit in the garden, but felt like a part of it. We built this free-standing crescent bench featuring hand-selected stone with tight, consistent gaps throughout the entire structure.
To ensure comfort meets durability, we capped it with smooth flagstone for the perfect flat seating surface. We worked around the existing shrubs to integrate the bench seamlessly into the landscape and finished it off with a custom circular stepping stone path.
This is what happens when vision meets craftsmanship.

Built to last. 🪨✨ There is something special about working with stone. It’s not just about stacking rocks; it’s about creating structure, texture, and a legacy that will stand for generations. Here is a look back at some of our favorite stone wall projects.
