🔨 PREP TALK TUESDAY | Load-Bearing vs. Non-Load-Bearing Walls
Thinking about opening up your floor plan? Before you grab the sledgehammer, there's one pretty important question:
Is that wall load-bearing?
Not every wall in your home serves the same purpose.
🏠 Load-bearing walls help support the weight of the structure above them and transfer that weight down through the home.
🚧Non-load-bearing walls primarily divide spaces and generally don't support the structure above.
The tricky part? You can't always tell just by looking at a wall.
A few things can provide clues—like the direction of floor or ceiling joists, where the wall sits in the home, and what's directly above or below it—but those clues aren't enough to start demolition.
Removing or modifying a load-bearing wall may require additional structural support, such as a properly designed beam, and could require permits and professional evaluation.
