Like you, before this, I owned my own landscape installation company as well. I had no college degree and had never worked for another landscaping company. Although we grew to over 1 million in annual revenue in just under 3 years, it was difficult to say the least. Installing larger projects, and managing larger maintenance/annual planting contracts required expert estimation & plan drafting knowledge I simply didn’t have.

I reached out to many landscapers and paid them to be my mentors, and also paid to learn the hard way (I’m sure you know what I mean lol). Creating estimates is more than simply winning a job – it’s about creating a fair/competitive (not always the cheapest) deal for the client while also protecting you and your employees. Back when I was younger and had first opened my first landscape installation business, I may have made some of the dumbest mistakes imaginable… I paid a software developer to BUILD my own landscape estimation software for me without a thought that maybe someone out there had already done it… I also used Excel and paper computing before this. One day after consulting with a fellow landscaper in the industry I learned they used Dynascape, and then after consulting with another I learned they used LMN, and then another told me their experience with SyncedUp.

The point here is that sometimes it’s best to not reinvent the wheel but perfect your ability to roll it. By utilizing the software listed above, and learning some of the best industry practices my landscaping business quickly doubled its revenue 3 years in a row.

One of the best ways to scale your business is to KNOW your numbers and estimate effectively. After all, if you’re not profiting, why put up with all the hassles of this industry right?

If you’re anything like me, learning how to effectively scale your landscape field operations can feel like planning a trip to Mars at first. When I was running my own landscaping business I found that bridging the gap between my current installation work, and the work I wanted to do came down to my ability to properly create designs and estimates. At the time I lacked the ability to create unique, winning landscape design plans and didn’t have the budget to hire someone that did. After a lot of industry networking this seemed to be a common trend – either an in house designer was just barely in budget but wasn’t efficient due to their current job demands OR the position was out of budget entirely leaving the landscape business owner to figure it out for themselves.
