One question I get a lot is whether upgrading to a Class 4 shingle is actually worth it.
For many Colorado homeowners, it is definitely worth considering.
A Class 4 shingle has passed the highest level of impact-resistance testing under the UL 2218 standard. During testing, steel balls are dropped onto the shingle to see how well it resists cracking and splitting.
That does not mean the shingle is hail-proof, but it does mean it is designed and tested to handle impact better than a standard shingle.
Another benefit is that some insurance companies may offer a premium discount for qualifying Class 4 shingles. Discounts vary, so it is always best to check with your insurance agent.
