A fire rated door has one job and it only does it once.

The release has to drop the door and the door has to reset properly afterward, which is why these get tested on a schedule rather than assumed to be fine. Rolling fire doors in older buildings are the ones that surprise people.

Door goes halfway down, comes right back up. Nothing is in the way. It does it again.

That's usually the safety sensors. They sit a few inches off the floor on either side of the opening, and they only need a small nudge out of line to quit working.

If yours is doing this, check for a spider web across the lens, a bike leaning on the bracket, or anything else sitting in the beam. If you can't find it, call us. We'll fix it.

The power goes out in the middle of a snowstorm. Your car is in the garage, the door is down, and the opener has nothing to run on.

You can pull the release and lift it by hand, which is fine right up until you're doing it in the dark with a double door. An opener with battery backup keeps working through the outage and closes behind you when you leave.

Worth thinking about before a storm, not during one.

It isn't your imagination. Garage doors do move slower when it gets cold.

Grease thickens, steel contracts, and the rubber seal along the bottom stiffens and grips the concrete. The opener works harder to do the same job, so it runs slower and sounds worse doing it.

Some of that is normal. A door that struggles, stops, or reverses partway up is telling you something else. That one is worth a call.

Stand in your garage with the door shut and look at the bottom edge. If you can see daylight, that's your heating bill leaving.

A worn bottom seal lets in cold air, blowing snow, and anything looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter. Uneven concrete makes it worse. Both are fixable without touching the door itself.

Easy thing to check this weekend while the weather is still cooperating.
