🥶 THIS PAST WINTER WAS BRUTAL ON OUR HOMES — AND NOW IS THE TIME TO GET READY BEFORE THE COLD RETURNS.

This extremely cold winter and wet spring did more damage to my customers’ homes than I can remember seeing in years.

Do you remember January and February? The cold arrived and seemed like it never left. Snow remained around our homes for weeks, followed by the big melt and then relentless spring rain.

The extreme temperature changes took a toll.

I spent much of this spring and summer helping customers repair cracked and damaged window components, doors that no longer opened or closed properly, deteriorated weather seals, and other problems caused or made worse by age, moisture and extreme weather.

But one of my customers recently decided to take a proactive approach instead of waiting for another freezing winter to expose the problems.

She called me and asked if I could come to her home and perform an efficiency evaluation.

Last winter, she could actually feel cold air coming in around and underneath several of her entry doors and around certain windows.

During my evaluation, I showed her that the original weather seals around her entry doors had shrunk considerably from normal aging. In several areas, the seals weren’t even making contact with the doors anymore.

That means heated air escapes — and cold outside air finds its way in.

I also discovered another problem: some of the doors were no longer pulling tightly into the frame when locked. There was noticeable movement in the doors even after they were latched.

Today I corrected those problems.

I removed the deteriorated weather seals and installed new, properly fitted seals around four entry doors.

But replacing the seals was only part of the job.

I also carefully adjusted the positioning of the doors within their frames, adjusted the strike plates, and fine-tuned the lock assemblies so the doors would pull tightly against the new weather seals when closed.

The difference was incredible.

When I finished:

✅ The doors opened and closed smoothly.

✅ The locks latched firmly.

✅ The doors pulled tightly against the new weather seals.

✅ There was no visible daylight around the perimeter of the doors.

✅ You could actually feel the new seals making firm contact as the doors closed.

On several of the doors, you could even hear that slight “suction” sound as the door was drawn tightly against the weatherproof seal.

That is exactly what I wanted to see.

I’m really proud of this customer for taking care of the problem before winter arrives.

The money spent improving the seals and operation of these doors can continue paying dividends year after year through improved comfort, reduced drafts and less unnecessary heating loss.

🏠 Take a walk around your home tonight.

Stand near your entry doors.

Can you feel a draft?

Can you see daylight around the door?

Does the door move back and forth after you lock it?

Are the seals flattened, cracked, hardened or pulling away from the frame?

If the answer is yes, now is the time to address it — not when it’s 20 degrees outside.

🏡 KEEPING MY CUSTOMERS SAFE AT HOME — IT’S PERSONAL TO ME

When I first started working in Metuchen 12 years ago, I could never have imagined how many of my customers would become so much more than simply business relationships.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of working in many of the same homes several times a year, year after year. I’ve gotten to know my customers and their families, and I genuinely care about their health, safety, comfort, and well-being.

Today, a large percentage of my longtime customers are seniors, and over the past several years I have seen a growing need for home safety improvements that can help them remain comfortable and independent in their own homes.

One of the most common projects I now perform is the professional installation of shower safety bars, bathroom grab bars, and additional handrails throughout the home — especially at the top and bottom of staircases, on steep basement stairs, and in other areas that may become more difficult to navigate as we get older.

Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of distraction, one missed step, or one slip to cause an accident that can be life-changing.

That is why I take this responsibility extremely seriously.

I have completed more than 10 hours of specialized online training in ADA-related accessibility and home safety practices, and I received a Certificate of Excellence and Achievement from Age Safe® America. Their continuing education helps keep me informed about new safety products, installation techniques, and ways to make homes safer and more comfortable for aging adults.

I have also developed my own custom-fabricated mounting hardware for installing grab bars in bathrooms with fiberglass tub and shower surrounds.

Fiberglass surrounds can create a difficult installation situation because the finished surface may sit several inches away from the actual wall studs. My custom mounting system allows the grab bar to be securely supported all the way back to the structural framing behind the fiberglass — providing the strong, dependable installation that a true safety bar requires.

And today’s safety products do not have to make your home look institutional.

There are now many attractive options available in different finishes, colors, sizes, and decorative styles that can complement your bathroom and your home while still providing the support and security you need.

My dear beloved customers…
Yesterday I underwent a heart procedure, and thankfully the doctors were able to find and treat a blockage without having to perform traditional open-heart surgery. Because they were able to handle it through a much less invasive procedure, my recovery should be measured in weeks rather than months.

I’m extremely grateful to my doctors, nurses, and everyone who cared for me, and especially grateful for all the prayers, love, and support from my family and friends.

I’ll be taking the next couple of weeks to recover, get stronger, and follow the doctors’ orders — but if all continues to go well, The HOME DOCTOR will be back to work full-time October 1st.

Thank you all for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️🙏

God is good. I’m grateful, I’m positive, and I’m looking forward to getting back to doing what I love.

A few weeks ago, I shared some photos as we prepared our home for our daughter Tessa and Aaron’s rehearsal dinner, and I was truly touched by all of the kind words, comments, and well wishes from so many of my wonderful customers and friends.
Thank you all so much for sharing in our excitement and happiness.

I shared a little of the preparation that went into getting our home ready for this very special dinner party… so I think it’s only fitting that I share how beautifully it all came together. Here’s a look at the finished result—and an evening we’ll always remember.

We gathered for a beautiful candlelight dinner in honor of our daughter and our future son-in-law as they prepare to begin this wonderful new chapter of their lives together.

It was one of those evenings I know we will carry in our hearts for a very long time. Our home was filled with family, friends, flowers, candlelight, laughter, love, and so much gratitude.

I couldn’t be prouder of my daughter, and I’m especially grateful for my wonderful wife, who poured so much love and care into making the evening special. Seeing everything come together was truly something beautiful—our home has never looked prettier.
Most of all, we are simply grateful—for our family, for the people who shared this evening with us, and for the blessing of watching two people we love begin their life together. 🙏💞✝️
