Our thoughts and prayers for those impacted by today's severe weather. And to the families of the five people lost in today's storms.

Are you prepared?!?

Are you prepared?!?

Thursday severe weather? Well, for most of us it'll just be a hot, humid day as temps soar into the upper 80s/low 90s; but for a few of us it may get quite feisty outside.

A strong storm system moving through the upper midwest will have a trailing cold front move through the state. This will usher in warm, moist air from the gulf and move into a very energetic environment. We have all the ingredients in place, but we do have a limitation: a strong cap.

A strong cap, or lid in the atmosphere, will prevent widespread, upscale growth of convection across the state. This is why we are messaging that most of you won't see any storms. We have to recognize though that the atmosphere is very primed for severe weather so if one or two storms do break through the cap, then they'll be VERY severe. This is what Oklahoma sees typically with strong set ups and caps.

If a storm or two can break through the cap in the yellow region, then hail up to baseball sized, damaging winds up to 80MPH and a long-track tornado are all possible. The orange region has the better chance for multiple storms with the same hazards as they'll be more north closer to the low pressure.

Areas in green, I think the severe risk is really really low but you're included for "just in case".

Remember, 95% won't see a severe t-storm; but the other 5% will probably see a significant one and we care about those folks very much.

⚠️ UPGRADE TO LEVEL 4/5 RISK FOR FRIDAY-

The Storm Prediction Center has now upgraded our entire area to a level 4/5 risk for severe weather Friday (1pm-10pm). This moderate risk is driven by potentially widespread and destructive wind gusts in excess of 80 mph in some spots. There is also a risk for large to very large hail, and tornadoes, some of which may be strong. This will be a high impact event for our area. Plan accordingly and have a way to receive warnings throughout the day.

Bad weather is on the way! If you sustain storm damage, give RTJ Construction a call!

INCREASED SEVERE THREAT: We have been upgraded to a level 4 severe risk (5 is the highest)!

Very large hail and damaging winds are our primary concerns, but some tornadoes are possible as well.

The upgraded risk mainly accounts for an increasing wind threat, especially the further east you go. Monitor these risks and heed warnings if they happen in your area.

A bit quieter for the hazardous weather outlook and we'll take it!
Keep in mind, moderate to major flooding is ongoing on the Ohio River and this will continue to crest until this weekend.

Friday AM we may see a freeze north of I-80 with no impacts expected.

Saturday AM we expect a widespread frost/freeze situation across the state. Be ready to cover up those plants!
Sunday it'll be breezy, no impacts.

Sunday night into Monday we expect storms to move through. We could see a strong storm or two in southern IL but risk is low. A few strong gusts in northern IL are possible too.

Tuesday we'll be quiet, Wednesday maybe some AM frost north of I-70. Thursday maybe a few storms, not seeing any severe risk at this point.
