The purple beech. One of my all time fav trees. 🥰
Fagus sylvatica atropurpurea grows 60-80 feet tall. Very slowly. It can be a finicky thing. Gets a little cranky with heat. Likes a little protection and cooling in youth. But once it gets going, it’s pretty solid! The bark is smooth and reminds me of an elephants skin. It’ll hold its fall dead leaves all winter until new growth pushes them out. It’s a late leafer in spring but when it does pop out, it’s over night and with a bang! Young shiny leaves are bronze colored and bright upon emergence. Over the day it turns deep burgundy. 🤩
Gorgeous tree. Not a popular one. But should be!!! ♥️
