The purple beech. One of my all time fav trees. 🥰

Fagus sylvatica atropurpurea grows 60-80 feet tall. Very slowly. It can be a finicky thing. Gets a little cranky with heat. Likes a little protection and cooling in youth. But once it gets going, it’s pretty solid! The bark is smooth and reminds me of an elephants skin. It’ll hold its fall dead leaves all winter until new growth pushes them out. It’s a late leafer in spring but when it does pop out, it’s over night and with a bang! Young shiny leaves are bronze colored and bright upon emergence. Over the day it turns deep burgundy. 🤩

Gorgeous tree. Not a popular one. But should be!!! ♥️

I’m adding another plant to today’s posts because this one is just a cool one. While blackberry picking and birdwatching, I saw this big hackberry tree. The bark is just so unique as are the leaves. It is a native to Illinois and can be found through the whole state. I just love it for that weird bark and the asymmetrical leaves!! 🥰

Happy Wildlife Wednesday!! 🦋

The little painted lady butterfly! A common sight around here but if you want more of them along with other butterflies, lots of flowers and especially native flowers are a great way!! Try Echinacea, Black Eyes Susan’s, Autumn Joy Sedum, Butterfly bush, Caryopteris, an Spirea! All great additions to the landscape!! 🥰

Hello friends!

Since I (AJ) have started handling the FB page for AJD Landcaping again, I wanted to take a minute to show you what I’ve been up to for a while.

Since leaving the landscaping world (even though I never really did or ever totally have since I’ve tried numerous times over the last 20 something years 🙄🤣), I continued on with woodworking and branched out into the laser world too. I started in 2017 with live edge work and in 2022, I backed down from the big stuff, added a laser and off I went! Maybe some of you know my business, maybe not. But I wanted to take a minute to share what I’ve been doing. Just in case you’d been wondering!!

Silva & Ore is my little wood and laser shop!! I create all kinds of unique and custom projects. I have a Planty Line that a sell to little plant shops around the country. And I focus my custom work more locally. You can find my creations in local stores - Quintons Crafthouse, SoCal Soul in Edwardsville, The Grumpy Grizzly in Grafton and PlantEm in Alton. And you can check out my website!! It’s a lot and it keeps me on my toes! Follow my page to see what’s going on in the shop!!

The Alley Cat Redbud is a stable, sun tolerant variegated redbud (Cercis canadensis). There is also a variegated redbed called silver cloud (if I remember correctly) that has larger white patches and isn’t as mottled at the alley cat making the silver cloud less sun tolerant due to lack of chlorophyll.

So, even though the alley cat isn’t quite as bold and eye catching, it’s still unique and variegated!!!!

How did it get its name??? The Alley Cat was discovered just a few years ago in an alley in Kentucky. It’s considered a spontaneous stable genetic mutation of the native parent plant.

Alan Bush discovered it behind his house and it was cultivated and made available in 2016!! Just 10 years ago!!

The one in the photo is now about 3 yesrs old. I drove to Kentucky to get my hands on it. Now often seen at local nurseries in Illinois, it’s still not the easiest to find. But it’s out there!!
