💡 Turn it off… or turn it up? 🤔

It’s one of the most common questions we hear during the summer:

“Should I turn my AC completely off when I leave, or just raise the thermostat?”

The answer depends on how long you’ll be away.

🏠 Running a quick errand?
If you’re only leaving for 15–30 minutes, there’s very little energy savings from turning your system off. Your AC will simply have to work to cool the home again when you return.

💼 Heading to work for the day?
Experts say that if you’ll be gone for around 8 hours, raising your thermostat by 7–10°F while you’re away can reduce your cooling costs by up to 10% over time.

Here are a few more ways to help keep your home comfortable while keeping energy costs under control:

✅ Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day.
✅ Replace your HVAC air filter regularly to improve airflow.
✅ Keep doors and windows closed while your AC is running.
✅ Use ceiling fans to help circulate cool air (remember—they cool people, not rooms!).
✅ Consider a smart thermostat that automatically adjusts temperatures based on your schedule.

⚠️ One thing we don’t recommend: constantly turning your system completely off and back on throughout the day. Frequent cycling can make your system work harder to catch back up, especially during extreme heat and in our humid Mid-Atlantic climate.

💙 At United Service Specialists, we believe the best way to save money is by having an HVAC system that’s clean, properly maintained, and running efficiently.

Have you noticed your electric bill climbing this summer? Tell us in the comments what’s helped you keep your home comfortable, or send us a message if your system isn’t keeping up with the heat. We’re always happy to help!

🥵 **The heat isn't just uncomfortable & it can become dangerous when the power goes out.**

Our hearts go out to the thousands of Maryland families dealing with power outages during this stretch of dangerous heat. When your home loses power, it doesn't take long for indoor temperatures to become unsafe, especially for young children, older adults, pets, and anyone with medical conditions.

💙 If you're one of the families affected, here are a few things you can do while waiting for power to be restored:

✅ Stay hydrated & please drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
✅ Keep blinds and curtains closed to block out direct sunlight.
✅ Avoid using ovens or appliances that create extra heat.
✅ If possible, spend time at a local cooling center, library, mall, or another air-conditioned public space. Many communities throughout Maryland and the DC region have opened cooling centers due to the extreme temperatures.
✅ Check on neighbors, family members, and anyone who may be vulnerable.

⚠️ Once your power returns, if your air conditioner isn't cooling properly, don't ignore it. Power interruptions and extreme heat can sometimes expose existing HVAC issues.

The team at United Service Specialists is here to help our community get comfortable again. If your system isn't performing the way it should after your power is restored, send us a message and we'll do everything we can to help.

❤️ Stay safe, stay cool, and know that our thoughts are with everyone affected by these outages.

As a dangerous heatwave continues, nearly 1,500 Baltimore Gas and Electric customers face power outages with restoration possibly delayed until Tuesday.

The DMV is facing a challenging combination of dangerous heat, poor air quality, and the potential for severe storms today. With lingering smoke, high humidity, and the chance for damaging weather later, it's a good reminder that the air you breathe and the water you rely on at home matter just as much as the weather outside.

🏠 Here are a few things every homeowner can do today:
💨 Replace or check your HVAC air filter if it's overdue.
🌿 If anyone in your home has allergies, asthma, or other respiratory concerns, consider limiting outdoor air from entering your home during periods of poor air quality.
💧 Stay hydrated, and if you've noticed an unusual taste, odor, or discoloration in your water after recent storms, don't ignore it.
⚡ If severe weather causes power outages, give your HVAC system a few minutes before restarting once power is restored.

At United Service Specialists, we believe a healthy home starts with clean air and clean water. Whether it's improving your indoor air quality, helping protect your plumbing after storms, or making sure your cooling system is ready to handle the heat, we're here to help our neighbors throughout the DMV.

🎁 For a limited time, new customers can take advantage of our FREE Home Air & Water Check, where we'll help identify opportunities to improve your home's comfort, efficiency, and overall wellness.

Stay safe, stay cool, and take care of one another. ❤️

A combination of dense morning fog, low cloud cover, and residual smoke from holiday fireworks has triggered major air quality and heat advisories across the DMV region as severe storms loom Sunday evening.

⚠️ AIR-CONDITIONER RECALL ALERT ⚠️

WUSA9 is helping spread the word about a recall involving more than 13,500 Amana window and through-the-wall air conditioners and heat pumps due to a possible fire and burn risk.

This recall applies only to certain units sold between April and December 2025. It does not apply to every Amana product or central HVAC system.

🔎 What to check:

• Affected model numbers begin with PB, AH or AE
• The model and serial number can usually be found on a white label near the lower-front edge of the unit
• Anyone with an affected unit should stop using it and contact Daikin Comfort Technologies for official refund instructions

United Service Specialists is sharing this as a community safety notice. Please pass it along to neighbors, landlords, property managers and local business owners who may use window or through-the-wall cooling units.

For problems involving your home’s central heating and cooling system, the USS team is here to help.

A recall was issued for 13,514 Amana air conditioners due to fire and burn hazards, urging users to stop use and seek refunds.

💙 Our hearts are with everyone impacted by last night’s storms.

The July 4th celebrations ended differently for many Maryland families, especially in communities like Taneytown and across Carroll County, where strong storms left behind fallen trees, damaged property, blocked roads, and widespread power outages. Our thoughts are with everyone beginning their holiday weekend with cleanup instead of celebration. 💙

Please remember:
🌳 Stay clear of downed trees and power lines.
⚠️ Never assume a fallen wire is safe—report it immediately.
🚧 Give utility and emergency crews the space they need to work.
📸 If your home was affected, document any damage before beginning cleanup if it is safe to do so.

To all of the first responders, utility crews, public works teams, and neighbors already helping one another thank you. Your efforts are what make our communities so resilient.

If your home experienced storm-related damage affecting your heating, cooling, plumbing, or water systems, our team is here to help however we can. Even if you simply have questions about what to check after a storm, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Please stay safe, check on your neighbors, and know that our thoughts are with every family working to recover today. ❤️🇺🇸
