On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were taken in acts of unimaginable evil. Families lost loved ones, first responders ran toward danger, and ordinary people showed extraordinary courage.
Twenty-five years later, we remember the innocent victims inside the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard the hijacked aircraft. We remember the passengers of Flight 93 who fought back.
We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, medical professionals, and civilians who answered the call that day. We remember the search and rescue teams, and the countless men and women who remained in the days, weeks, and months that followed to recover the fallen, clear the sites, and help communities begin to heal.
We remember the families who continue to carry the weight of unimaginable loss, and the many who later answered the call to serve our country.
Today, we honor those we lost, those who served, and the courage, sacrifice, and unity that followed one of our nation’s darkest days.
May we never forget September 11, 2001.
