A waterfront property should feel like it belongs to the shoreline, not like a typical backyard dropped on the water.
Designing along the waterfront comes with unique challenges. Between strict DEC regulations, waterfront setbacks, and native planting requirements, every decision has to be carefully considered.
For this South Shore waterfront renovation, we embraced those constraints and used them to help shape the design. Large masses of native and coastal-inspired plantings, natural boulder groupings, ornamental grasses, and dune-like landforms create a landscape that feels like it belongs on the site rather than being imposed on it.
The outdoor living spaces were designed to maximize views while working within the required setbacks, creating a seamless connection between the home, the landscape, and the water beyond.
Sometimes the best designs come from simplifying. Fewer plant species, stronger masses, natural materials, and repetition throughout the property create a landscape that feels relaxed, timeless, and authentic to the waterfront setting.
