πŸ¦‹ What's a Spicebush Butterfly look like before it's a butterfly? 🀣

We think it is time to consider planting a deer resistant Spicebush (plant a few to ensure berries) in your yard. Our favorite local source is Blue Stem Natives

To really attract butterflies and hummingbirds throughout the season, plant Spicebushes near Summersweet bushes.

πŸ“ DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT STRAWBERRY?

BAD: Mock strawberry is a very invasive plant from Asia that offers little value to our wildlife. It has yellow flowers, leaves that are typically ignored by our insects, and bland, tasteless berries.

GOOD: Wild Strawberry is an amazing native ground cover that helps dozens of mammal, bird and insect species. It has white flowers and sweet, tart little berries that local creatures love. It makes for a great groundcover to crowd out w**ds.

PS Humans can make tea from Wild Strawberry leaves or eat the delicious berries.

🍌If you want more hummingbirds, you can use FRUIT.

Banana peels, orange or apple slices: these all attract tiny fruit flies and other gnats which make up a huge part of a hummingbird's diet (they need protein!). You can put the fruit on a platform feeder, or hang off of a shepherd's crook.

🀣The best way to get rid of invasive garlic mustard. PS if you DON'T have a donkey, pull it by the root and throw it away in a plastic trash bag before June 15th.

πŸ‘‹ Want a plant to help fireflies? Put some Joe Pye W**d in your yard! This plant is amazing for birds, butterflies and pollinators, plus its tall, dense clusters keep the ground humidity high underneath....perfect environment for firefly who spend the first 1-2 years of their lives underground. PS keep your summertime lighting low at night to help them . More on them:

- As larvae, fireflies eat slugs, snails & small insects. That's why NOT raking some of your leaves can really help them.

- Adult fireflies eat pollen and nectar. They love coneflower, yarrow, bee balm, milkw**d, buttonbush, asters and goldenrod.

- Chemically treating your lawn KILLS them.

πŸ€“ Do we ever suggest that you DON'T w**d garlic mustard? Yes.....

You still have time to prevent massive garlic mustard infestations this year if you act in the the next 2 weeks.

BUT when the plants feature visible black seeds, it is very, very easy to accidentally spread garlic mustard to uninfected wooded areas, simply by walking through the w**ds. Seeds can hitchhike on your clothing or shake loose when you are w**ding. In this case, we recommend waiting until next spring.

Exception? If the plants are growing in a well-tended area like your garden or yard, it is generally safe because you'll be able to keep an eye on new seedlings next year.

😲 Alert: Please DON'T remove! Hummingbirds are counting on you to NOT w**d these plants (or at least not all of them).

Hummingbirds rely on Jewelw**d (Impatiens capensis) later in the summer when there's less for them to eat....at exactly the time when they're trying to fatten up for their migrations south.
