A piece of history, right in Glenwood.

This whole-home renovation gave us the opportunity to thoughtfully reimagine a mid-1700s home in Western Howard County for the way its owners live today, without losing the character that made the home special in the first place.

Carefully scaled additions created a larger, light-filled kitchen and entertaining space. An original fireplace was transformed into a two-sided feature connecting the kitchen and dining room. And upstairs, a smarter reconfiguration created an entirely new primary bath without adding a single square foot.

It’s the kind of project we love: respecting what’s already there while finding thoughtful ways to make an older home work beautifully for today.

13 years. Countless projects. And a lot of clients who have become friends along the way.

This month’s Meet the Team spotlight features Site Supervisor Mike Cox, who has been part of Smithouse almost from the beginning.

For Mike, a successful renovation is about much more than delivering a beautiful finished space. It’s about listening to clients, earning their trust, navigating the inevitable challenges, and making the months spent together during construction a positive part of the experience.

As Mike puts it, “When I leave the project and we can still be considered friends, that for me holds the most value.”

Some projects are worth revisiting.

Completed in 2018, this whole-home renovation in Mount Washington is a great example of thoughtful design standing the test of time.

Throughout the home, beautiful Crystal cabinetry combines classic craftsmanship with smart, functional details, from the bold kitchen cabinetry and hidden storage solutions to built-ins that make every inch of the home work a little harder.

Eight years later, the details still feel fresh, proving that good design isn't about following trends. It's about creating a home that works beautifully for the people who live there, today and for years to come.

We’ve shown you the progress. Now it’s time for the finished product.

JP is back at our Guilford orangerie project, and this time Site Supervisor Dave Stevens is giving us a tour of the completed space, and sharing some of what it took to get here.

The goal was to create an addition that looked and felt as though it had always belonged to this beautiful Guilford home. That meant getting every detail right.

Custom-fabricated glass lanterns. Radiant-heated marble floors. Intricate interior and exterior trim. Stonework completed in the middle of winter. And some pretty interesting logistics just getting materials and equipment onto the site.

The end result makes it all look easy. Dave can tell you otherwise.
