A quick shout out to our followers: I apologize for not keeping the page as up to date as we were before, but I’m going to try and be a little more active as time allows. A favor I would ask of you guys: we have recently been hit with a couple of negative google reviews (unfairly so, in my opinion, as these accounts either didn’t understand the treatment procedure, or, more likely, didn’t like the fact that their problems were going to require multiple treatments). My history with reviews is that people are much more likely to take the time to leave a negative review than to do the same for a positive experience. I would ask that if you could, and if you have had a positive experience with us, go to our google listing and give us your thoughts in a review. Thanks in advance...we have the best clients, hands-down!

The Big Red pest fact of the day: the Cat Flea nymph has the unique ability to place itself in a state of “suspended animation”. It can remain lifeless for over a year while waiting on a warm-blooded creature to pass by, allowing it the chance to feed.

The Big Red pest fact of the day: bedbugs (which we speak of often here) are continuing to become a growing problem, mainly in part to human transportation from active site to a new place. You can help prevent this by taking the following steps:
1. Check your hotel room/cruise cabin, house you’re visiting, etc, bedding upon entry. Look for spotty black stains around the seams of the mattress.
2. Don’t leave your luggage open in a hotel room, and don’t set in close proximity to the bed
3. Wash your travel clothes as soon as you return home, and inspect your luggage for bedbugs
4. Try and avoid purchasing 2nd hand/rent-to-own furniture.
-Doing these things wont completely prevent you ever having to deal with bedbugs, but it will certainly enhance your chances of avoiding them. In any case, if you ever find yourself having to deal with them, call a professional pest control company, as they are almost impossible to handle on your own.

The Big Red Pest fact of the day: Flesh flies are very much like common house flies, except for the fact that they tend to eat strictly decaying protein (meat), and tend to deposit their larvae (maggots) onto said meat so that they can feed and grow as well. Hope you weren’t eating when you read that. 🤣

The Big Red Pest fact of the day: we are often asked about lizards around this time of year. Our response is that you should leave these fantastic “bug-catchers” alone! The most common one we see is the Green Anole. He loves insects, particularly crickets and small spiders. When you see him, he may not be green, as they have the ability to change color to a limited degree.

The Big Red pest fact of the day: Delusory Parasitosis, also known as Ekbom Syndrome, is the belief that “invisible” or tiny insects are burrowing into the skin of a person. The effects are very real, as the person will often dig or claw at themselves to remove the presumed insects. On more than one occasion, I have, upon asking for a client to save us some of the affecting insects, been handed a Ziplock bag full of lint, skin, dirt, and scabs. Because this is an issue of perception and is in the mind of the person, the only effective treatment is often given by a psychiatrist or psychologist.

The Big Red pest fact of the day: Honey bees are often considered a pest by those who don’t realize their importance in our circle of life. The Honey Bee is the single-largest pollinator of plants and crops in the world, and nearly 90% of plants world-wide require cross-pollination for survival. It’s not hyperbole to say that without Honey Bees, life on this planet would soon become untenable. In the event that you encounter a Honey Bee infestation within the walls of your home (it does happen), please don’t use insecticide to handle the problem. Many beekeepers are willing and happy to come remove the queen, and thus safely remove the colony. We at Big Red Pest Control do not treat for Honey Bees, nor should any other reputable pest control company.

The Big Red pest fact of the day: Let’s talk scorpions. Yep, contrary to what many people know or believe, we’ve got them, most often the Carolina or Southern Devil scorpion. They are native to this area, and are far more common than you’d think. Look for them around wood piles or in leaf piles. The good news is that their sting is akin to a bee sting, and their diet includes spiders and other pesky insects as well.

The Big Red pest fact of the day: this one’s personal. When you are selling or buying a home, please remember that this is going to probably be the single largest purchase of your lifetime. CL-100 reports (termite letters) are often, yet not always, required for real estate closings. Even if it isn’t required, I urge you to have the inspection performed, as an active termite infestation can reduce your dream home into an extensive nightmare in a New York minute.
Also, while home inspectors and inspections are an integral part of the home-buying process, don’t rely on them for accurate termite information, unless they happen to also be a licensed pest control applicator. For $100, we can inspect and give you peace of mind when it comes to the one thing that causes more damage to homes annually than floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes combined: termites. And that’s a very small price to pay.
