🐶 Hudson is NOT happy about his new neighbors.
He was trying to enjoy a nice fall afternoon on the porch, and this guy showed up uninvited. That little brown shield-shaped bug next to him is a stink bug, and he's not alone. This time of year they show up with two of their friends:
Stink bugs: brown, shield-shaped, and named for the smell they give off when you crush them or bother them.
Asian lady beetles: orange or red, look like ladybugs, and sometimes they bite.
Boxelder bugs: black with red-orange stripes, usually piled up near maple or boxelder trees.
On warm afternoons after the first cool nights, all three gather on sunny south- and west-facing walls, decks, and porches looking for a way inside for the winter. Once they're in your walls and attic, they'll keep showing up in windows all the way into spring.
What actually helps (and the next few weeks matter most):
• Caulk gaps around windows, door frames, and where siding meets trim
• Check the weatherstripping on doors and the screens on attic and soffit vents
• Seal around pipes, cables, and dryer vents where they come through the wall
• A spray bottle of soapy water knocks down clusters on the outside of the house
If they're already inside:
• Vacuum them up instead of squishing them. Stink bugs live up to their name, and lady beetles leave a yellow stain and a nasty smell.
• Tip: put a knee-high stocking inside the vacuum hose and secure it with a rubber band, so you can dump them outside instead of in your vacuum bag.
None of these bugs damage your house. They're just a nuisance, and the easiest time to stop them is before they get in. Hudson would appreciate it. 🐾
Anyone else seeing these on their house yet? 👇
If they're already showing up on your house, give us a call. Our fall perimeter spray stops them before they move in for the winter.
