**BOX ELDER BUGS**

During the summer, you may notice a few of these black insects with distinctive reddish-orange markings. However, in the fall it may seem like they are EVERYWHERE!

They primarily feed on Box Elder Trees, but they also can be found around maple and ash trees. As temperatures start to cool, box elder bugs start looking for a warmer place to spend the winter. Your home could be just what they are looking for!

You may start to see large groups gathering on sunny exterior walls on warm September and October days. They are looking for openings to get inside and move in. The good news is they are really not a health threat and they don't do structural damage to your home, but they can be a major NUISANCE!!

When a few here or there turn into hundreds or thousands, you should give us a call! Once inside, they can leave stains on curtains, walls and other surfaces if they are crushed.

Prevention is key! Seal up any potential entry points and get an exterior treatment to keep them away!

**STINGING INSECTS - MUD DAUBERS**
This is our last post for the season about Stinging Insects. So let's end with one that is quite common! The Mud Dauber

If you have noticed small tubes or clumps of dried mud stuck to your home, garage or shed, you may likely have mud daubers. There are several species of mud daubers that vary in color and size.

They are solitary wasps that build their nests from mud (to state the obvious). Generally speaking, mud daubers are not aggressive like paper wasps, yellow jackets or bald-faced hornets. They rarely sting unless they feel threatened or handled.

The Good and The Not Good...
The Good - Mud daubers are spider hunters! Some species are even known for hunting black widow spiders. Female mud daubers capture and paralyze spiders and place them inside the mud nests and lay an egg on them. When the larva hatches, the spider becomes its food source. Also, adult males feed on nectar and may help pollinate flowers.

The Not Good...
The nests they build on your home or structure can be quite unsightly. They can be hard to remove and may even leave stains.

If you find a mud dauber nest in a place that doesn't bother you, you could leave it alone and let them do some spider hunting!! But if you find one that you would rather not be seen, give us a call!

** DO YOU THINK STINK BUGS REALLY STINK? **
It's time to start talking about fall "occasional invaders". Up first we have the STINK BUG!

The answer is "YES" they really do STINK! Stink bugs release a strong and unpleasant odor when they feel threatened or are crushed. It is their natural defense against predators.

During this time of year, they start gathering around sunny sides of homes, around windows, doors, and small openings. They will look for any opportunity to get inside so they can over winter inside.

The BEST time to deal with them is BEFORE they move inside. Make sure to seal up cracks and openings around doors and windows as best you can. You can also have a thorough exterior treatment done to help keep them away!

**STINGING INSECTS - CICADA KILLERS**
If you have noticed a very large wasps flying low in your back yard and digging holes, it is likely a Cicada Killer. They are not as scary as they look!

This time of year, we hear the sounds of the Cicada outside. Sometimes they can be so loud! Female cicada killer wasps hunt cicadas, paralyze them, and carry them back to their developing young. Thus giving them the name "Cicada Killer".

The males defend their territory, but not by stinging. In fact they do NOT even have the ability to sting. They try to intimidate with their size. They may also fly at you or even try to bump into you. Only females have the ability to sting, but they are generally not aggressive unless handled or threatened.

Several cicada killers may inhabit the same area. This does not mean there is a colony like yellow jackets. They just like the area. Cicada killers are solitary wasps, but if there are several in an area, it can have the appearance of a colony.

If you notice these large wasps, leave them alone. Yes, they are scary looking, but are not aggressive and will only sting if you handle them or threaten them. This time of year we get calls about treating for "Ground Hornets/Yellow Jackets" when it could just be cicada killers.

If you question whether you have one issue or the other, we are happy to help take a look and see if treatment is needed.

"WHY ARE FLEAS SO BAD THIS SUMMER**
Summer conditions create heavy outdoor flea pressure which can lead to fleas being carried indoors.

Here are some reasons they can become an indoor issue:
- Wildlife such as raccoons, feral cats, rodents and other mammals find their way inside a home through openings, crawl spaces, attics, etc.
- Wildlife may have a nest or den near where pets may be going while outside.
- Pets pick them up while in the yard. - IMPORTANT make sure your pets are on preventative medication!!

Getting a flea infestation under control can be frustrating, but we are here to help you! It may take more than one treatment to address the issue, but we will walk you through the process.

If you are dealing with a flea problem, give us a call!

**STINGING INSECTS - YELLOW JACKETS**
Yellow jacket colonies have been growing all summer and are now likely quite large and you may start seeing a lot more activity.

It is important to know that yellow jackets are capable of building their colonies above and below ground. Sometimes people refer to them as ground hornets.

If you come across a hole in the ground that is filled with yellow jackets coming and going STAY AWAY!! Call for professional help because they can become very aggressive if they feel their nest is threatened.

Above ground, their nests can be hard to spot and are typically a papery looking ball that is gray or tan in color. They may be found in wall voids, behind siding, under decks or porches, inside sheds, hollow trees, and landscape timbers.

When yellow jackets feel threated they can attack in numbers and they are capable of stinging multiple times.

If you see activity, try and find the source but stay a safe distance away and give us a call!
