CLUSTER FLIES!
SNEAKY and CLEVER... DON'T LET YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS BE THEIR WINTER HANGOUT!
An interesting fall fact about cluster flies is that they choose their winter hangouts based on structural height and optical warmth, making them a literal nightmare for multi-story buildings and historic homes. AND there are an abundance of historic homes and buildings in the communities we service!
When cool autumn air hits Missouri, cluster flies look for the taller buildings in the area. This could include places such as church steeples, multi-story houses, or tall office buildings. They target the uppermost levels, attics, and dark wall voids, where heat naturally rises.
Because they trace the warmth radiating from the sun, thousands of cluster flies from local fields will simultaneously come together on the south and west-facing walls of a building on a sunny autumn afternoon. And here is another crazy fact... they use chemical pheromones to signal to other flies, causing a massive, sudden swarm. Talk about team work!!! They then crawl through tiny gaps in window frames or eaves, packing tightly together in "clusters" (sometimes thousands deep) inside attic walls to sleep through the winter.
