That broom can wait.

Dry sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings can send contaminated particles into the air. Keep children and pets away from a routine small cleanup area while you open doors and windows. Then leave it to air out for 30 minutes.

Return with rubber or plastic gloves. Soak the droppings with household disinfectant until very wet and follow the label's contact time. Wipe them up only after that time has passed, then bag the waste.

Before removing the gloves, wash your gloved hands. Take them off and wash your bare hands with soap and warm water.

Heavy contamination or a large affected area needs the CDC's higher-protection guidance, not this short routine. PCC can address rodent activity, but we don't provide contamination cleanup.

For an accessible nest with no live rodent present, follow the cleanup order recommended by the CDC: ventilate the closed space for 30 minutes and leave while it airs out. Put on rubber or plastic gloves, wet the nest and surrounding area with disinfectant, and allow the label's contact time. Remove the wet material, double-bag it, clean nearby surfaces, and wash your hands.

Then check the cleaned area for fresh droppings, gnawing, tracks, or new shredded material. If fresh signs appear, PCC can identify where mice are active and note potential access points, then help get the problem under control through the Pest Protection Club's quarterly service.

Before cleanup, look from a safe distance. Start with where it sits and the shape of the nearby web. Then watch for fresh webbing or a spider nearby. Those details can help narrow the possibilities, but the sac itself cannot tell you the species or danger level.

If you can reach a stationary sac from the floor without getting close to a live spider, remove it with the nearby web using a broom or vacuum. Dispose of the sac, then clean the area. Don't reach blindly or climb for it.

If the signs keep returning, PCC can inspect the broader pest pressure and provide ongoing quarterly protection.

A spotted beetle near your window may be an Asian lady beetle, but color and spot count alone don't settle the identification. These beetles can be yellow, orange, or red. Their spots vary in number and visibility, and some beetles have none. A black M-shaped marking behind the head is a stronger clue.

For an accessible beetle indoors, vacuum it gently or capture it in a container. Avoid crushing it because it may release a strong-smelling yellow fluid that can stain light surfaces. Then note which room and window the sightings are near, and whether more appear after removal.

If the markings don't line up or sightings keep returning, PCC can identify the insect and inspect where the activity is occurring.

Start at the doorway and scan before shifting storage. Check whether pet food and birdseed are sealed, whether cardboard or folded fabric has sat undisturbed, and whether garage-door edges or utility openings have fresh signs nearby.

If you find droppings or shredded nesting material, don't sweep, vacuum, or shift nearby storage while the material is dry. Keep children and pets away, ventilate the garage, and follow wet-disinfection steps before cleanup. One sign doesn't confirm how many mice are present, but fresh signs after cleanup can show that activity is continuing.
