A stink bug lands on your windowsill and your first instinct is to swat it. Don't.
That smell isn't an accident. It's a defensive compound the bug releases when it feels threatened, and crushing it is the fastest way to trigger it. You go from one bug on the sill to a smell in the room.
Ease it into a cup of soapy water instead, or vacuum it up and empty the bag or canister outside right away. No contact, no compound, and the vacuum handles a whole cluster if one shows up on a warm afternoon.
One more thing worth knowing: they don't breed indoors. The ones getting in this fall are just riding out winter, not building a population.
