It's that time of year where the white petals come out and that special perfume wafts through the air.
Meet Pyrus calleryana, more commonly known as the Callery or Bradford Pear. Once a tree touted for its beautiful petals and thick canopy, it has since been revealed to be more of a nuisance.
Bradford pears often develop unions, or branch forks, with tight angles as the tree loves to direct growth directly upward. These tight angles result in branches pushing each other away and ultimately causing many limbs to fail out of seemingly nowhere.
Now considered invasive and a fineable offense in many states, these trees are notorious for escaping into the wild and taking over local ecosystems, producing thorned hybrid trees with fruit often unfit for wildlife sustenance.
