During a recent Q&A Home Inspection, I did what I always do: I ran the water continuously throughout the entire inspection process. At first, it looked fine. But after keeping that system under a continuous load, the water turned completely dirty and brown. Why? Because running it drew down the water table, revealing a massive hidden hole right in the well casing. Mud, surface runoff, and groundwater were pouring straight into the drinking water supply.

This is classic suspected asbestos insulation, often found in homes built before the 1980s. When it's in good shape, it’s not always an immediate danger. But when it starts getting damaged, fraying, or breaking apart like this, it becomes what we call 'friable' [1, 2]. That means tiny microscopic fibers can get pulled right into your HVAC airflow and breathed into your lungs [2, 3]. Remediation for this can cost thousands of dollars
