A crane block's sheave has to balance two opposing jobs: it needs to be hard enough to resist wire rope abrasion, but ductile enough to resist cracking under pressure.

On Crosby McKissick crane blocks, achieving that balance comes down to flame hardening. Right after welding the hub into the center of the roll-forged sheave donut, torch heating and rapid quenching creates a wear-resistant case on the wire rope groove, resisting scoring and extending the life of the wire rope and sheave while keeping the inner core of the sheave ductile to absorb impacts under a load.
