🌳🚽 TREE ROOTS VS. YOUR SEWER LINE: WHAT EVERY HOMEOWNER SHOULD KNOW!
Those beautiful trees in your yard can be great for shade and curb appeal… but their roots can cause BIG problems underground. 🌳😳
Here are some of the most common questions we get:
🔴 CAN TREE ROOTS DAMAGE SEWER LINES?
YES! Tree roots are naturally searching for moisture. If your sewer pipe has a small crack, loose joint, or damaged section, roots can find their way inside and continue growing. Eventually, they can create serious blockages and even contribute to pipe damage.
🔴 HOW DO TREE ROOTS GET INTO SEWER PIPES?
Roots typically enter through cracks, broken pipes, or gaps at pipe joints. Once inside, they can grow into a thick mass that catches toilet paper, grease, and other debris. 🌱➡️🚽
🔴 HOW DO YOU REMOVE TREE ROOTS FROM A SEWER LINE?
Depending on the situation, professionals can use equipment such as root cutters, augers, or high-pressure water jetting to clear roots from the line. A camera inspection can then help determine whether there is underlying pipe damage that needs to be repaired.
🔴 WHAT TREES CAUSE SEWER LINE PROBLEMS?
Trees with aggressive, moisture-seeking root systems can create problems when planted too close to sewer lines. Willows are particularly known for aggressive roots, but they aren't the only trees capable of causing issues. 🌳
🔴 HOW DO I STOP ROOTS FROM GROWING IN MY SEWER LINE?
The best long-term solution is addressing the reason the roots got in there in the first place. If the pipe is cracked or has a damaged joint, cleaning the roots out won't fix the underlying problem. Depending on the condition of the line, repair or replacement may be necessary.
And when planting new trees, consider their mature root growth and keep them away from sewer lines whenever possible. 🌱
🔴 WILL TREE ROOTS GROW BACK AFTER SEWER CLEANING?
They can! Cleaning removes the roots that are currently inside the pipe, but if the pipe still has cracks or open joints, roots may find their way back in. That's why a camera inspection after—or as part of—the cleaning process can be so valuable.
🔴 DOES HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COVER TREE ROOT DAMAGE TO SEWER LINES?
Usually, standard homeowners insurance does not cover tree-root intrusion itself, because it is generally considered gradual damage or maintenance-related. However, some insurance companies offer optional service-line/buried-utility coverage that may cover certain root-related sewer line damage. Coverage varies by policy, so check with your insurance agent.
