This concrete spiral staircase already looks like somebody poured a giant slide through the middle of the house. 😂

Then the real entertainment starts.

Big Camille comes down HARD on Nikolai, and for a second it looks like somebody is about to have a very bad day on the jobsite.

Nope.

Just the crew messing with each other. 😭👏

And honestly, Brad would rather discover his employees are pranking him than discover they’ve made a real mistake.

One gives everybody something to laugh about.

The other gives you paperwork, repairs, delays, and a very different kind of meeting. 😂

Good crews work hard.

Great crews can usually have a little fun while they’re doing it.

Before you assume the floor you SEE is the floor the house originally had…

start peeling back the layers. 😂

Under this wood floor?

Terrazzo.

Brad briefly calls it travertine because apparently every construction professional is allowed one vocabulary malfunction per jobsite. 😭

But once the terrazzo is exposed, the history of the house starts making a little more sense.

Terrazzo was commonly used in older homes, and instead of removing it, many renovations simply installed newer flooring directly over the top.

So that hardwood you’re looking at today may be sitting on top of a completely different finished floor from decades ago.

That’s why demo can be one of the most interesting parts of a renovation.

Sometimes you remove the old material…

and discover something even older underneath it.

There’s nothing technically stopping you from putting hardwood flooring on the wall.

The bigger question is:

**Should you?** 😂

This installer starts with OSB, then attaches hardwood planks in a way that keeps the screws hidden.

Only the top edge gets fastened.

The next plank covers it.

Repeat.

From an installation standpoint, it’s clean and efficient.

They even show the concept going directly over bathroom tile using a strong construction adhesive instead of mechanical fasteners.

But Brad notices the visual tradeoff immediately.

Floorboards are short.

So instead of getting long, uninterrupted wood running across the wall, you get seam after seam after seam.

And that can make the finished wall look busier than traditional wood paneling made from longer boards.

Could most people walk into the room and think it looks great?

Absolutely.

Would Brad notice every single seam?

Also absolutely. 😭😂

Sometimes a construction idea can be perfectly functional and still come down to one thing:

A roof truss can hold a LOT of weight.

But turn it sideways on a truck and suddenly it needs a little help. 😂

That’s because trusses are engineered primarily to carry loads in a specific orientation once they’re installed.

During shipping, they’re stacked flat.

And if the ends are hanging too far beyond the support below them, gravity can make those sections sag.

That bending can put unnecessary stress on the connector plates and joints.

So what’s the solution?

A few strategically placed 2x4s underneath the overhanging ends.

Nothing fancy.

Just temporary support keeping the trusses from flexing more than they should on the way to the jobsite.

Construction is full of little details like this that look random until you understand what they’re protecting. 👏

Today’s episode of:

**Things you definitely weren’t looking for during a renovation.** 😂

Brad finds a little cutoff piece of 2x6 that looks completely normal from one side.

Flip it over?

Surprise.

Somebody left a construction Easter egg hiding underneath. 👀

And THIS is one of the fun parts of opening up and working on houses.

You can spend all day looking at framing, plumbing, electrical and drywall…

then suddenly some completely random little discovery becomes the most entertaining thing on the jobsite.

No major construction lesson today.

Just proof that you should apparently inspect both sides of the scrap pile. 😂👏

The worst time to realize your jobsite wasn’t cleaned up properly?

About five minutes after the hurricane winds arrive. 😭🌪️

An active renovation has a LOT of loose material around it.

Dumpsters.

Scrap lumber.

Trash.

Rebar.

Open windows.

Unfinished doors.

Normally?

Just part of construction.

During a hurricane?

Potential problems everywhere.

Brad’s storm prep starts with removing the dumpster completely.

Even when it’s full.

The dumpster company can take it back to a secured yard instead of leaving an entire container of loose debris sitting at the property.

Then every exposed window or door opening gets covered.

After that, anything loose outside gets moved inside or properly secured.

Because the question isn’t:

“Do you think this piece of material will move?”

It’s:

“Do you really want to find out during a hurricane?” 😂

Good storm prep means leaving the site with as little available for the wind to grab as possible.

Structure’s up.

Something is definitely happening.

There are nails sticking out everywhere like tiny little tetanus decorations.

But other than that?

Looks great. 😭

Brad’s trying VERY hard to be supportive here.

Because sometimes you see a construction project and think:

“Yep. Somebody is absolutely going to ask for the next payment after this.”

Would we personally want to walk anywhere near those exposed nails?

Absolutely not.

But hey…

Progress is progress. 😂

There are two kinds of construction time:

**How long the job SHOULD take:**
30 minutes.

**How long it takes after one tiny thing goes wrong:**
See you in four hours. 😂

That’s why this meme hits so hard.

You ask the apprentice why a simple task consumed half the day, and the explanation starts with:

“I tried to do that strategy…”

Oh no. 😭

One failed approach turns into another.

Tools come out that were never supposed to be involved.

At some point somebody is Googling something.

And suddenly a tiny job has developed a full backstory.

Laugh at the apprentice all you want…

but anyone who’s worked construction long enough has BEEN the apprentice in this meme. 😂👏

One of the worst things floodwater can touch in your house?

The electrical system. 😬⚡

Especially in coastal areas where that water can carry salt.

Once outlets, wiring, and electrical equipment are submerged, you’re not only dealing with moisture.

You’re dealing with what gets LEFT behind.

Salt.

Corrosion.

Contamination on exposed conductors and connections.

And that can turn into electrical failures, shorts, or potentially a fire hazard later on.

That’s why Brad points out one of the smartest things you can do when building or substantially renovating in a flood-prone coastal area:

GET THE IMPORTANT STUFF UP.

Raise the structure where required.

Keep electrical equipment above the expected flood elevation.

Protect the meter.

Protect the panel.

Protect as much of the wiring system as possible.

In this example, the exterior electrical equipment starts several feet above grade—well above the historic flood levels Brad is discussing for this property.

You can’t stop the water from coming.

But good coastal construction can dramatically reduce what the water gets to destroy.

Plumbing lesson of the day:

When everything upstairs drains DOWN…

it eventually has to go somewhere. 😂

This is the drain stack doing exactly that.

Wastewater from the second story feeds into this larger line, and right there on the pipe is one of the most useful little features in the whole system:

A cleanout.

If the house ever develops a backup, that cap gives a plumber a direct place to inspect or snake the line instead of trying to attack the problem from a random fixture.

The interesting part here is that the original stack is older work.

Brad’s team kept what was already functioning, tied new drainage into it, and added another cleanout on a newer two-inch line.

And yes, Brad would generally prefer a little more room with something like a four-inch main because more space can mean fewer opportunities for debris to catch at fittings.

But the three-inch line here?

Code-compliant.

Working.

And already proven in this house.

That’s remodeling in the real world.

Sometimes the smartest move isn’t:

“Rip everything out.”

It’s:

“Understand what works, then build around it correctly.”
