THAT final pull might be one of the most satisfying things in construction. 😂👏

There are certain construction processes that you can watch over and over again for absolutely no practical reason.

Screeding is one of them.

Especially that final pull.

Everything starts rough and uneven, the screed moves across the surface, and suddenly you're left with this beautifully leveled finish behind it.

Brad could probably watch that part all day. 😂

But then he notices something that might bother him even more than an uneven surface:

The comments are turned off.

Brad doesn't understand why so many construction creators on Instagram disable their comments.

Most people scrolling aren't going to dig through every response anyway.

And the people who DO?

They're probably your super fans, other tradespeople, or people genuinely interested enough in the work to join the conversation.

Sure, construction comments can get absolutely ruthless. 😂

But that's also part of what makes construction content so entertaining.

Keep the comments on. Let the trades argue. We'll bring popcorn. 🍿

That is a LOT of rebar for a swimming pool. 😂🏊

At first, Brad notices something interesting about the steel being used here.

The rebar itself is pretty small.

But considering they're building a swimming pool, that makes more sense. Pool reinforcement doesn't necessarily look the same as the heavier structural steel Brad is used to seeing on other types of concrete work.

What REALLY catches his attention is how much of it they're using.

In Florida, Brad is accustomed to seeing larger rebar with fewer individual pieces in comparable pool construction.

Here?

Smaller rebar.

A whole lot more of it.

Different construction methods can get pretty interesting depending on where you're watching from.

But regardless of the method, Brad can appreciate one thing:

Watching somebody bend rebar with the right tool is ridiculously satisfying. 😂

I have absolutely NO idea what we’re accomplishing here. 😂🤷‍♂️

Sometimes Brad watches a construction video and immediately understands exactly what the person is doing.

Other times...

We get this.

He watches.

He waits.

He tries to figure out what problem they're solving.

And eventually lands on:

“This is kind of dumb.” 😂

But Brad also knows there could be a perfectly legitimate reason for the technique that he's completely missing.

So rather than pretending he knows everything, he's handing this one over to the comments.

Construction people: what are they doing, and WHY are they doing it? 👇

And yes, Brad may have blamed the confusion on the “freaking Europeans” for approximately two seconds.

He’s kidding. 😂

Now somebody please explain this before he watches it another six times.

The wire goes INTO the wall just so it can immediately come BACK OUT. 😂⚡

It looks a little funny, but there’s a reason for what you’re seeing here.

This is an exterior block wall, so running electrical isn't quite the same as running wire through a typical framed interior wall.

The wiring travels down the wall, swoops into the block, and then comes back out where it enters the electrical box.

Basically:

Down.

Into the wall.

Annnnd right back out again. 😂

Brad also points out the foam around the area where the wiring penetrates the wall, helping seal around those openings before everything eventually gets covered.

Once the wall is finished, you won't see this weird little wire detour at all.

You'll just see an outlet.

And that's a pretty good example of construction in general:

The finished product looks simple because all the complicated-looking stuff gets hidden behind it.

Yesterday this was the OUTSIDE of the house. Now we’ve gotta convince it that it’s an interior wall. 😂🏠

This block wall originally belonged to a porch, which means it was built as an exterior wall.

Now that the porch is becoming part of the home's interior space, the wall needs a little transformation of its own.

That starts with furring strips installed over the masonry to create the framing surface needed for the finished wall.

But Brad points out two pieces that are especially important:

The 1x4 at the top and the 1x4 at the bottom.

The top board gives the drywall crew solid material to screw into along the ceiling line.

The bottom board gives the trim carpenter something solid to nail the baseboard into later.

And while everything is open, this is also the time to handle things like adding any necessary electrical outlets before the drywall covers it all up.

That's the funny thing about converting old exterior space into living space.

You don't just say, “Congratulations, you're inside now.” 😂

Every layer has to be adapted for its new job.

The wall is gone, but somebody still has to hold the house up. 😂🏠

One of the biggest misconceptions about creating an open floor plan is that you can just remove the wall you don't want.

If that wall is load-bearing, it's carrying weight from the structure above it.

Take it out and that load needs a new path down to the foundation.

On this project, the solution is a large beam made from two LVLs sandwiched together.

LVL stands for laminated veneer lumber, an engineered wood product commonly used where substantial structural strength is needed.

Instead of the roof framing relying on the wall that used to be here, the rafters now connect into this new LVL beam using structural hangers Brad calls “buckets.”

That allows the old wall to disappear and the space to open completely toward the new block wall.

Eventually, homeowners won't see the LVLs.

They won't see the buckets.

They won't see most of the structural work at all.

They'll just see one giant open room and wonder why removing a wall was such a big project. 😂

You know the easiest way to fix a giant gap? DON’T LEAVE A GIANT GAP. 😂🤦‍♂️

This video is showing a method for filling and sealing a pretty substantial gap.

And Brad is immediately not impressed.

Yes, there are ways to fill gaps.

Yes, you can add material, work it in, smooth everything out, and try to make the finished product look acceptable.

But Brad’s bigger point is:

Why are we creating a gap this large in the first place?

He’s tried fixing situations like this plenty of times, and when the opening starts out this big, getting the final repair to disappear can be extremely difficult.

And on a professional job?

Brad says this finished result simply wouldn’t be acceptable.

The goal isn't figuring out the fanciest way to hide poor preparation.

The goal is doing the work correctly enough that you don't need to hide it.

Sometimes the best repair technique is prevention. 😂

Somebody explain why we’re reinventing the chalk line. 😂🤦‍♂️

His first reaction?

“Somebody should be fired. What the hell?” 😂

Brad’s trying to understand the method being used here, but the longer he watches, the more confused he gets.

Because they need a temporary line on the surface...

But they’re not actually snapping a chalk line.

Which brings Brad to the obvious question:

Why not just use chalk?

It’s literally designed to give you a quick reference line, and in an exterior application, the chalk can eventually wash away with rain.

Simple.

Fast.

No need to turn marking a straight line into a brand-new construction technique. 😂

Sometimes the old-school tool sitting in your toolbox is still the easiest answer.

Okay, THIS is an old-house upgrade I can actually get behind. 👏🏠

Every once in a while Brad watches an internet construction trick and immediately thinks:

“That’s an excellent idea.”

This reinforcement method is designed to strengthen the connection between parts of an older home's structure using larger bolts and additional fastening.

And in a place where high winds and major storms are a real concern, strengthening weak connections in an older home can be worth investigating.

Brad likes this idea enough that he says if he owned the right older house and the reinforcement was appropriate for that structure...

He'd legitimately consider doing it himself.

Because upgrades that help strengthen an older home's structural connections can potentially make a meaningful difference during a severe wind event.

His only complaint about the video?

We watched the guy do basically the same thing twice. 😂

Bigger bolts. More reinforcement. Got it.

Now cut those bolt ends off and show us the finished product!

the homeowner wanted the wall gone, but unfortunately the ROOF was using it. 😂🏠

This is what happens when you want to open up a room by removing a load-bearing wall.

Something still has to carry everything that wall was supporting.

In this case, the homeowner also didn't want a big beam hanging down below the ceiling, so the team installed what Brad calls an upset beam, meaning the beam is tucked up into the ceiling structure instead of dropping below it.

Looks cleaner.

But it creates another challenge.

The rafters can't simply sit on top of the beam anymore. Instead, they need to connect directly into the face of the beam.

That's where these heavy steel connectors, or “buckets,” come in.

The buckets fit around the ends of the rafters and are securely fastened to both the rafters and the beam, creating the structural connection needed to transfer those loads.

Once everything gets closed up?

Homeowners will see an open room and a clean ceiling.

They'll never see all the steel hardware doing the heavy lifting above their heads. 😂
