This roof got a stunning transformation. ๐Ÿก

๐Ÿ”น Roof: GAF Timberline HDZ
๐Ÿ”น Color: Hunter Green

A bold color choice that gives this farmhouse style home real personality while still holding up to whatever the seasons bring.

Results like this come from working with a GAF Master Elite certified installer, the highest certification GAF offers and one held by less than 3% of roofing contractors nationwide. That means every layer gets installed to manufacturer standards, not just the shingles on top.

Asphalt shingles aren't the most common roofing material by accident, even in a climate that puts them through real heat and storm stress.

According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, roughly 80% of homes in the U.S. are topped with asphalt shingles, more than every other roofing material combined. That kind of market share doesn't happen without a real reason behind it.

Part of it is cost. Asphalt shingles remain one of the most affordable roofing materials to install without sacrificing performance. Part of it is availability. Because so many manufacturers produce asphalt shingles, homeowners get more options in color, style, and warranty coverage, including impact-rated and wind-rated shingles built for exactly the kind of weather Florida sees most.

Most shingles homeowners choose today are the thicker, more dimensional style, not the flat 3-tab shingles many homes were originally built with. That thicker profile typically carries manufacturer warranties in the 25 to 30 year range, well beyond what older 3-tab shingles were rated for.

None of this means every asphalt shingle roof performs the same. Proper attic ventilation, correct nailing, and quality underlayment all affect how close a roof actually gets to its rated lifespan. Two identical shingles installed differently can age very differently.

Here's a detail that costs homeowners real money: most insurance policies start the claim filing window from the date of the storm, not the date you noticed the damage. Wait a few weeks to call anyone after a hurricane or major storm, and you create a timing gap an adjuster can use to question the claim, even when the damage is completely real.

Documentation matters just as much as timing. Adjusters work from what they can verify, not from what you tell them happened. That means photos from multiple angles, close-ups of specific damage points, and a written record of when the storm hit versus when you noticed the problem. A professional inspection report carries more weight than a homeowner's description alone, especially for wind damage that's subtle from the ground.

There's also a right and wrong order to all of this. Temporary fixes, like a tarp over an exposed area, are reasonable before the adjuster arrives. Permanent repairs aren't, since they can remove the evidence the adjuster needs to see. Having your roofing contractor on-site during the adjuster's visit helps too. They can point directly to damage an adjuster might miss in a short walkthrough.

This week's blog breaks down the full process, from what to document first to what to say when you call your insurance company.

The part of a roof replacement most homeowners dread is not the cost. It is the disruption. A crew on your property, debris in your yard, and no clear sense of what is happening or how long it will take.

Kate Van Ness from Madison had a different experience. The crew worked clean, communicated every step of the process, and left her property in better shape than they found it.

That is not a bonus. That is how every Ridge Top project is supposed to go

Myth: if storm damage were serious, you'd be able to see it from the ground.

Fact: most of the damage that actually matters starts where you can't see it. Wind-driven rain and hurricane-force gusts can lift shingles and break their seal without leaving a mark visible from the street, and that kind of damage tends to get worse every time it rains until it turns into a leak.

This is also where insurance claims get complicated. Adjusters work from what they can verify, not from what a homeowner describes, and most claims that fall short come down to documentation: no photos taken before repairs started, no timeline tied to the actual storm date, or damage that was never properly inspected in the first place.

Ridge Top documents every storm damage inspection with a detailed, photo-backed report, and we'll meet your insurance adjuster on-site to walk through the scope together. That's the difference between hoping the adjuster catches everything and making sure they do.

Thirty-year-old storm and exterior doors are usually doing more than just looking dated. At that age, seals wear out, frames shift, and doors that once fit snug start letting in drafts and moisture most homeowners just get used to, especially through storm season.

Replacing both together, instead of one at a time, means matching hardware, finishes, and performance across the whole entryway instead of ending up with two doors that don't quite match.

Here's what one Ridge Top homeowner had to say about his new doors and the crew who installed them.

ENERGY STAR certified doors and windows can lower heating and cooling costs by an average of up to 13% compared to non-certified products. But that number only holds up if the installation doesn't undercut it, which matters even more when your AC is working overtime.

A door's rating is measured in a lab. What you actually get depends on the rough opening, the seal, and the flashing around the frame, not just the sticker on the glass.

This week's blog breaks down what a quality installation actually requires, beyond the door itself.

Window flashing isn't one piece of material.

It's three layers working together:
๐Ÿ”น Vycor tape
๐Ÿ”น Tyvek tape
๐Ÿ”น Z-flashing

The Z-flashing blocks water from getting in behind the siding. The tapes seal the gaps around it so nothing sneaks in from the sides.

Skip one layer, and the whole system loses its redundancy. In hurricane country, where wind driven rain tests every seam on your home, that redundancy is what stands between a strong storm and water damage inside your walls.

A door doesn't have to be old to let air and moisture in. A new door installed with the wrong reveal gap or a rough opening that isn't square can perform worse than the door it replaced, even brand new out of the box.

Age isn't actually the variable that matters, especially in Florida's climate. Installation is. That's the whole argument for going with an installer who's certified on the product, not just familiar with it.

This week's blog covers exactly what a quality entry door installation requires, and what to check before you assume new automatically means better sealed.
