Today's TVs are becoming “thinner and thinner”, which looks great. The sounds, however, are also becoming "thinner and thinner". The rich, full sounds of lower midrange sounds (lower portions of vocals, along with much of the male voice) are non-existent. The accuracy of being able to hear and understand what the newscaster is saying or the actress's dialogue is tremendously frustrating.
⠀
Combine that with our natural aging process and hearing decline, and understanding becomes increasingly more difficult.
⠀
Although we can't control how they mix the overbearing "action" scenes in contrast to the quieter "dialog" portions, we can at least make the dialog much easier to understand. The tiny, tinny TV speakers are very small, and currently (usually) mounted in the back of the TV, so their sound transmits out the rear, and needs to bounce off the wall (sometimes several times) before it reaches your ears.
⠀
Adding a soundbar can alleviate that particular issue. Although they really need a woofer or subwoofer to produce the full range of sound, particularly the lower frequencies that add fullness, even a basic soundbar can improve the ability to understand what is being said.
⠀
Any speaker firing forward can greatly improve your system, but price does dictate quality. If something is extremely "affordable", your quality will likely suffer. Keep in mind how frustrating it is to not be able to understand, how often you ask, "what did he say?" while watching something. And how often we rely upon our TV as a relaxing evening enjoyment, we recommend spending more for increased quality.
