* Adult beetles tunnel through the bark into the tree’s inner layer (the cambium), where the tree moves water and nutrients.
* They lay eggs under the bark.
* Larvae hatch and create winding tunnels called “galleries.”
* Many species also carry blue-stain fungus, which blocks the tree’s ability to move water.
* The combination of tunneling + fungus usually kills weakened trees, and aggressive infestations can kill healthy ones too.
